Our symbol, lightness, is a positive guidance in one's life. The light in someone's life portrays all the good things that the person is offering or doing for himself or others. Light is also a way for someone to get through the dark periods in their life. Having a light in you means you can get through anything because lightness is really all you need. Like in the article, light was used to rise in the darkness. When you have light in your life, it makes you a stronger person because you can persist in anything spite of the darkness that surrounds it, you can overcome it with light.

Light, sunshine, and noon are all manifestations of the same images. Colors such as yellow and red all play a role in the symbolic nature of the background and scenery. But, similar to the characters, the context determines what role the light or colors play. The Scarlet Letter's first chapter ends with an admonition to "relieve the darkening close of a tale of human frailty and sorrow" with "some sweet moral blossom." These opposites are found throughout the novel and often set the tone and define which side of good and evil envelop the characters.

The book will often use (particularly in the ladder half) red light to symbolize evil. This is particularly clear when it states directly that pestilence (notably one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse) is foreboded by a crimson light. (pg 233 ch 12)

Using light as a symbol of holiness and purity is nothing new, but it does well set up the idea of the other quotes of red light. It also is a good way of easily setting up the exclusivity of purity in a puritan society and that once you've stepped away from the light you can not step back in and the church will not take you back either.
Light then when no longer pure represents the evil of the world. The different color is seen as tainting the pure light that was more prevalent earlier in the book. Note also that this light is generally the color red, this references the color of the scarlet letter, which also symbolizes Hester"s falling from the light and breaking puritan ideals.
