One of the kids who's in poverty kills a "soc" the opposing gang, usually people who are more wealthy. The main characters Pony Boy and Johnny commit the act, and in order to stay alive they have to change their  identities, and run away from the life that they are used to. The book shows both the two living their life and growing up away form the world in a old Church. They only get exposed after there is a fire in the old church and johnny and pony boy have to save some kids that were exploring the church.
