The effect of shelter is that where is the direction of sun is facing for example in the basement it would be cooler because the sun direction is not pointing towards the basement so the upper portion would be warmer. When the surface is different the effects of heat will be different as well.
Light Surface:-
light surfaces such as grass can reflect heat when the heat gets on the light surface then the heat and the grasses  temperature  changes and it becomes cool.That is how the light surface works.
Dark surface:-
Dark surface such as tarmac store heat and that makes the grounds temperature hot because the ground is heavy because it is dark.So that is how dark surface works
