Representatives from twelve colonies gathered to coordinate a unified response to British rule. Georgia was the only colony not to attend the meeting, because they needed help from British redcoats to fight against Native American invasions. The congress drafted a list of grievances and called for a boycott of British goods. The meeting marked an important step towards American independence. It laid the groundwork for the Second Continental Congress, which would declare independence in 1776.
