As an offensive player you are taught to reach the ball out pass the goal line in clutch situations. As seen above, Patrick Mahomes is stretching his body to the max for the touchdown. If any part of the player's body were to touch the ground before the ball crosses, they would be counted down. The player must be in the air when the ball crosses in order for it to be considered a touchdown. This takes elite skill to complete! Players are not taught to reach out the ball out if the score isn't close. They are taught this because it is a high risk of turning the ball over. Defensive of players are taught to punch the ball out at any moment, so the offensive players must be cautious!

Richard Kinley II

There are many different ways to guard ball screens. Most times the strategy used varies on the ball handler in the pick-and-roll. For shooters, some coaches might choose to trap the ball handler in the screen. For some drivers, coaches might choose to ice ball screens or depending on if the ball screen is on a wing coaches might slide the screen by going under and meeting the ball handler on the other side. While there are many different ways to guard ball screens it ultimately comes down to the coach's defensive scheme and the team's defense as a whole.

Asa Shaw

After every touchdown, a field goal is attempted to add more points to the scoring team. A team can also kick a field goal if they do not have enough yards to get a first down. Although, the defense has an opportunity to block it. Usually the defense must jump up high enough to reach the block point. This happens rarely, but it is a huge turn of events for the defense!

Richard Kinley II

Here on Special Teams on either Punt Return/Kickoff Return, the returner is fair catching the football. It is important for these Special Teams units to have game sense because of the possible advantages that fair catching the ball can have. First, it can give the kickoff return team solid field position as it will allow the offense to start their drive on the 25 yard line. Next for the Punt Return unit it allows the returner to safely catch the ball where it lands rather than letting the ball bounce and sacrificing a significant amount of yards. This is why it is important for these Special Teams units to have the awareness to execute a fair catch, in order to provide their team with the best chance of success.

Anthony Landphere

An advantage that the offense has in Football is that they control when the ball is snapped. This leads offenses to create different cadences in order to draw the defense offsides which can result in a 5 yard penalty. The beauty of this is that if the defense jumps offsides the offenses' center is allowed to snap the ball to the quarterback, and the offense essentially has a free play to get the yards that they need. If the offense does not get the yards that they need for a first down, they can just accept the penalty and get an extra 5 yards and repeat the down. This takes game sense to execute as the center needs to be aware of the defense jumping offsides, as well as the entire offense because they need to run a play in order to make the most of the free play. Also, the entire offense needs to be aware of the cadence so they themselves do not jump offsides.

Anthony Landphere

In pass protection there is a slide side and a man side for the offensive line. In 5 man protection there is only 5 people blocking so if the defense brings more than 5 then the man side is responsible for “sorting” out the defense and determining who is more dangerous to the quarterback. In the picture is a basically example of a sort, as u can see there is only 2 people on the offensive line but a possibility of 3 people coming, therefore the 2 offensive lineman are responsible for reading the defenders post snap and decide who to block.

Keydrell Lewis

You only want to do this if you believe that your punter can stay up for most if not all of the remaining time left in the game. Taking a safety can take away any chance that the opposing team had of winning.

Nicholas Johnson

Defensively,

A drill that I would use to teach game sense is a pressing drill so that players can understand in a game when and when not to press a player for the ball, as well as how. In the drill we would have one player dribbling the ball at a constant, slow speed. The next player (partner) would be angled and moving their feet backwards switching their body as the player is dribbling with a certain foot. At a point, when the player goes to make a move or kicks it too far, a coach would explain that it is the time to step in and find the ball as a defensive player from the dribbler. We would continue to do this drill until it became more comfortable to take the ball at the right time. This drill teaches soccer iq in helping defenders find when the best time is to turn the ball over and turn it into a goal scoring opportunity.

Kaylie Bierman

The second example I have for a drill would be a heading drill. There would be 2 full sized goals placed with field players lined up in 2 lines behind the goal by 10 yards. On the other side, two field players are in separate square grids on the other side of the net. As coach says go, each field player will receive the ball in the air and attempt to head the ball either over the goal, or to the field player that just kicked it. This is important in teaching coming to the ball, maintaining a strong neck, and trying their best to get the ball to go as far as possible. In games, this is incredibly important as it makes players more confidents for challenges on headers in games which reduces the opportunity for injury.

Kaylie Bierman

One example of game sense in American football is the play action pass. It appears to be a running play, but ultimately the play will result in a pass if executed correctly. The quarterback will fake a handoff to the running back, which will throw the defense off. Then, the QB will look for their open receiver and pass to them. This specifically demonstrates tactics, where the offense takes advantage of defensive mistakes. The offensive players during this play need to continually scan the field to see where the defense is and how they react to the play. This can be executed in practice by first walking through the play with no defense. After this, run the play a few times at a pace that would be used in a game. Once the players get the hang of it, have the defense guard the offense as they run this play. The defense will get practice working together, the offense will learn how to maneuver through the defense, and the QB can learn how to better scan the field and make quick decisions.

Jackie Cloutier

Another example of game sense in American football is blitz, which is a defensive tactic that requires one or more players to attack the QB intensely. Using this tactic allows the defense to force the QB to make a quick decision that could result in an incomplete pass, an interception, or a sack. A strategic team will read the offense and use this play when it is necessary. For instance, if the offense is on a third or fourth down and has many yards to cover, the defense can opt in to use the blitz tactic to overwhelm the quarterback and regain possession of the ball. This can be practiced through a scrimmage where you have players rotate out who will be rushing the quarterback. In this case, have the offense practice their plays so everyone gets a chance to work on what they need to.

Jackie Cloutier

This is an example of having good game sense as this play is almost completely up to the referee. Some call more blocking fouls and some call more charges. Knowing when to take the charge is important because you need to know for sure that it is a charge and will not be questionable. This is also a rougher kind of play and can cause injuries. This should not be taken if it is not the right situation.

Rainy Bordelon

Targeting is a big thing in football especially on the defensive side of the ball. This can be using the crown of your helmet to make a tackle which could lead to serious injury to both players. Also if you get a flag for targeting you will be kicked out the game. It’s a must you work on tackling with your head up for safety reasons and so you can finish your game.

Anthony Watts

The Falcons are at the Panther's 49 on 4th and 11. The defender intercepts Matt Ryan's pass, great play for him but then he gets tackled at the Panther's 41 instead of just batting the ball down , and losing about 8 yards that the Panther's offense would have. Knocking the ball down gives his team better field position to take the lead or tie.

Game sense would be a team going for an onside kick. When teams go for an onside kick they are normally trying to get the ball back in their possession. This Is a perfect depiction of Penn state using the onside kick. Although the onside kick has a low success rate, its chances of success increase in a situation where the returning team does not expect it. It is generally only seen late in a game when a team has just scored but is still trailing by 8 points or fewer.

Well some things to know about football and that will change your game, is a certain way to catch the ball. For example if your a defender guarding a receiver and the quarterback throws the ball up and you have a change to get it it’s better to high point the ball and that means catching the ball at its highest point for your reach because if u try to catch it with your body you give the receiver a chance to knock it out. If your extended and jumping for the ball it makes it harder for him to reach for the ball.

A kicker when he is about to punt has to use game sense depending on where they are on the field. Depending on how far back the punter is he could kick it further into defenders territory rather than if he was at the 50 he would not halve top kick it as far. In some cases a team would just kick the field goal depending on the time on the clock.

If your a defender guarding a receiver and let’s say he beats you at some point in the route and is about to create space. If you can grab the receivers low hip and slingshot your self back into good position do it, and the reason I say low hip is because you will never pull the jersey so it won’t be a flag. Just a little technique to use because receivers push off and its hard to stay in position with them doing that so this just something that can help your game.

A situation of game sense in football, happens almost every single play. Although it is a team sport, each individual is responsible for another individual on the opposite team. The best game sense to break down in football would be 2 minute drill and also down by less than 6 points in the 4th quarter and need a score situation. starting off with the 2 minute drill, this only happens when it is 2nd for 4th quarter and you need to get down the field to score in a pretty fast pace to beat the time of 2 minutes. how you prepare for this moment is by opening targets for the quarterback to throw to do so some players may be a decoy while one or two main people are the primary targets (hot route) having game sense could be a pick and rub route to get another player on your team that's running the hot route open to for the go ahead touchdown thrown by the quarterback. it takes a team effort and quick thinking in this situation to make the game sense flow. you learn about 2 minute drill all the way down to middle school football when everyone has pads on.

secondly, the next situation or game sense to have would be being down in the 4th quarter and what are you going to do to win the game. I bring this up because just like the 2 minute drill you have to hurry and score in a timely manner without the clock running out and loosing the game. so, they both go hand in hand. having game sense for this would be knowing the down and distance and being able to get first down, don't let the quarterback get sacked and also going down getting out of bounds to stop the clock.

Mario Anderson
