In starting off a lesson on netiquette I would want to start off by asking the students who they communicate to their friends and family in person. Then a video could help the children to better understand what netiquette is and why it is important for them to understand. Then I would have the students discuss what they thing is good and bad netiquette with their classmates. We would then create a list on the board of what is both good and bad. I would also ask the students to take from their own online experiences and see if they have done any of these things. I would then end the lesson with the importance of internet safety and some of the ways that the students can keep themselves safe online. My learning objective is to teach my students the importance of the fair treatment of others online, they should treat others just as they would in person

1. Use kind words! Treat others as you would in person, how would you feel if someone was mean to you in person?
2. Re-read posts before actually posting them, mistakes can happen to anyone.
3. Use proper grammar and spelling. It helps to prevent any misunderstandings.
4. Do not use ALL CAPITALS when typing, it comes across as through you are YELLING!
5. Never pretend to be someone else. Whether this is through plagiarism or lying about your identity, these things are NOT OK.
6. Do not spam others with multiple messages. You can have your internet use limited or provoked by a teacher.

I was not aware that netiquette was a real thing, I had always just assumed that they were the unspoken rules of the internet. I think it is incredibly important for every child to know and understand these rules because they all have the internet at their fingertips now. Learning these rules can also help prevent cyber-bullying and harassment on the internet as well. Staying safe on the internet is important, especially for younger students.

The Children's Internet Protection Act, also known as CIPA, sets requirements on schools and libraries to follow and enforce an internet safety policy. The act was put into place in 2001 by congress to address concerns about children's access to harmful content on the internet. This act requires that these schools and libraries must have a district meeting before adopting the policy, have an internet safety policy, policies that monitor internet safety for minors, and discussions with students about online behavior.

Some critics have said that blocking websites can hinder learning. Many schools filter far beyond the requirements of the CIPA and therefore may be taking away important websites that can be beneficial to education. For example, in 2011 the ACLU questioned at both national and state levels to remove the blocking on well-known LGBT websites and resources. These websites have the potential to be not only educational to students but may also give students a support system that they might not have had before.

Many of these critics call to teach students to become digitally literate because they will eventually have to live in an unfiltered world. Many of these children already have unfiltered access at home. There has been a push to decrease the amount of filtering and blocking that schools currently do, because many schools block far beyond what is required of them.
