The violence/fear readers are exposed to in this novel are often scarier because of what we do not see. The very nature of a post-apocalyptic story is that there IS violence. Suicide is discussed, the violent ways the "bad" guys survive is discussed, there is a lot of discussion and usage of the gun the father has with them for protection.

These are a little amorphous in this novel - there isn't necessarily an overarching "villain" in this story, though we do see bad guys that must be escaped from - even cannibals, for example - that the father and boy are always on the run from. But another way to look at this good and evil is the goodness and resilience of the father and boy, vs. the hopelessness & desolation of their world which must be overcome.

There are questions that can be raised here, particularly concerning whether or not the way the father and boy live can be considered "living" at all. The mother chooses suicide over the kind of life they live. There are also of course the fates of characters, the father dying and the boy living on, carrying that fire, that goodness. And we can ask: who else does it seem has died? Do you think the population of the Earth that has been destroyed is better off where they're at, rather than this situation?

This is obviously an incredible and meaningful theme in this book. Their relationship is perhaps the embodiment of good in the good vs. evil conversation. What does it mean to love somebody more than yourself - to truly sacrifice everything for your son, for example? Did the mother who commit suicide do so selfishly? Is that true love for a son?
