Frank is an 8 year old third grade student. He is academically average in all areas with the exception of being potentially a little below average in reading. He struggles in music class. It is hypothesized that he engages in problem behavior that includes failing to follow directions by covering his ears, putting his head down, and requesting to use the restroom in order to escape participating in whole group music activities.

Frank will have a break card and will be taught how to use it. It will be explained to Frank and all of the staff who work with him. Expectations will be discussed. If he begins to put his head down, he will be prompted to use the card. When he indicates the need for a break by the use of the card, the staff member will say, " Frank, you can say, 'I need a break'"

A break card will be placed in music class. When his teacher sees him, she will prompt him by either holding the card, signaling, or vocalizing the need for a break. Positive praise will be given. His music teacher will continue to offer whole group activities in order to allow him to practice the new skill.
