If education in tertiary is not cheap, those from lower social status cannot afford to study programme, especially those like medical etc. Only those who are from higher income or above average can afford to pay for expensive tertiary education. It is difficult to adapt as socio-economic class is one of the biggest factors to this social disparity and that is a major issue on its own. Be it SK, S(J)K, when there is a dominant race as majority, the opportunity to learn what is needed for certain race or religion is purely neglected. There is no equality nor opportunity given in public schools. As in private schools, all aspects are mostly covered. But how many can afford that. Lower income learners has to adjust with everything and expecting them to build a social system. It is one sided mostly. Education system and school need to reform. Teach everything to everyone.

Chua Yi Hui MPP191169

From my point of view, I disagree that the education system serves to maintain the status quo of a society to some extent. For example, in the past, the school tend to categories students into the high performance class as the first class, and the poor performance class as the last class. With the class arrangement, it create a gap for the good and poor students and will have less interaction for them to exchange ideas and learn from each other being in a different class. With the class status label, the students can either build up confidence or be demotivated. In today, the education institution take the initiatives to remove this system and distribute the high performance and poor performance students in each of the class.

On the other hand, when we talk about current education system is maintaining the status quo, I do agree to certain extent. In the context of financial status, the parents with higher financial capacity will have the ability to send the children to a “famous” school or a school with better facilities or environment. They have the chances or opportunities to choose the schools that can provide a better learning environment or personal development for the children. If the parent is limited by financial condition, they could have lesser or to no opportunity to choose which education system or institution they could like to send the children to learn. Hence, mostly will send the children to the nearest school from home and the children might need to work on self-efficacy to break the social norms.

The topic is widely affected and shaped by various social factors, such as the social institution like family, social function like economic or politics, and etc.

Muhilarasaan Arumugam - MPP191014

Yes I agree but at some point I don't. Based on the current education does serves to maintain the status quo as an evidence of there are many schools for different races and as a Malaysian we are allowed to make the decision in which school we could study in. It doesn't create any conflicts as it doesn't specify a certain race that is suppose to be in the certain school it gives citizens the freedom on making decisions and the kurikulum that is offered is suitable for the particular school and subjects offered. Government initiatives is proven in maintaining this ethnicity when the education institute doesn't create any problems toward citizens.
Helps that government provides to students in the city and village is what has shown as the amount of graduates yearly is students from all over Malaysia despite the place or work we are in.

However in the context of private institutions, the case is totally different as it does not provide many aspects as the government schools are. As we know it does covered majority aspects when it comes to education and certainly covered a quality education, unfortunately not all the students in Malaysia could afford to choose to be in it. Lower income citizens can't be blame as private schools only accepts students who are willing to study at a higher costs.

Sivaneswary Manikam MPP191200 Social status or social quo being practice in our education system especially by practicing merit system to select students whom can enroll in public universities. Not all students from different ethic get in during merit system selection, end up they need either to study in private institution or else their dream became trash. We should not practice this culture in longer as all of them should be treat equally as they can obtain their education knowledge together and not leave out. Such tracking does have its advantages; it helps ensure that bright students learn as much as their abilities allow them, and it helps ensure that slower students are not taught over their heads. But conflict theorists say that tracking also helps perpetuate social inequality by locking students into faster and lower tracks. Worse yet, several studies show that students’ social class and race and ethnicity affect the track into which they are placed, even though their intellectual abilities and potential should be the only things that matter: White, middle-class students are more likely to be tracked “up,” while poorer students and students of color are more likely to be tracked “down.” Once they are tracked, students learn more if they are tracked up and less if they are tracked down. The latter tend to lose self-esteem and begin to think they have little academic ability and thus do worse in school because they were tracked down.

From my side, I do agree with what it mentioned in this topic. You know in early era, the related or teacher will base on students’ performance in class or in tests and put them in a not good place for ranks or reputation, which result in students will get much less interested in their study or put their study behind backs. For instead, due to the differences between girls and boys in development of talents or thing-solving field. They trend to divide 2 genders into one gender in one class, which is not beneficial to increase in skill so now almost all schools start to mix up all genders in a class. Like this in this environment where all students help each other and get each other’s strengths. MPP 191121 CHENWEI
