Scylla’s origins are murky and the matter of her parentage depends on which Greek philosopher you ask. The general consensus is that her father was a figure with a sea connection. Her supposed parentage has encompassed Hecate, Phorcys, and a number of other sea gods. However, a later tradition and the accepted story in the Odyssey, describes how she was transformed from a human to a monster through Circe's jealousy of her beauty. Scylla can make little noise but is menacing in appearance. With six legs and six heads that were endowed with three rows of teeth each, she was a fearsome monster in the Odyssey. She inhabits “a cave high up in the cliffs of the straits, [where she would wait] for unsuspecting prey - fish, dolphins, and men…” (Cartwright).

How Scylla Functions

In the Odyssey, Scylla functions with the whirlpool, Chairbydl, to swallow any passing sailors whole. Almost no ships have ever navigated their way through these adversities without losing many men in the process. As Odysseus tightly wraps around the current of Scylla, he and his crew face the full force of the six-headed monster. For each head of the serpent, a head of the sailors is eaten, “Odysseus also encountered Scylla and she gobbled up six of his men.”

Themes and Ideas of Scylla

In the text. Scylla and Charybdis jointly represent having to choose between two bad options. Odysseus had to choose between steering his men towards Scylla or Charybdis. Scylla swallows one sailor for every one of her five heads. Meanwhile, Charybdis, an enormous whirlpool, might swallow the entire crew. In either scenarios, Odysseus would lose his men. The only difference was that, with Scylla, only six lives would be sacrificed while, with Charybdis, he might lose his whole crew and never return home. Scylla is an obstacle in our hero's journey but her role in his development as a leader is important. She represents leaders sacrificing the "few for the many".

The quick and unexpected nature of the deaths of Odysseus' men through Scylla represents how fast tragedies can occur in life. With no warning from Odysseus about what they were approaching, the six unfortunate men probably didn't see their deaths coming. In a matter of moments, Scylla would have snapped them up already. This depicts how uncontrollable life is.
