Vincent struggled throughout his life with his mental health, leading him to be admitted to what would be considered an asylum at the time. During his stay he continued to paint, one of the pieces he painted would come to be one of his most well known pieces, starry night. He would spend many hours staring out of the windows when he wasn't in treatment, and on many of his sleepless nights he would take in the night sky and revel in its beauty. The tortured artist is both a stereotype and a caricature. The stereotype being applied to artists in film and real life, an assumption applied to any person who claims to be an artist. It is a caricature portrayed in films, books, almost any media you can find. It is the idea that artists must suffer to create. While this claim can be applied to some, it did not apply to Vincent. Vincent did not create his best work when he was suffering like is often presumed, but instead created as a coping mechanism, a response to the pain he felt. Even though this may be the truth people often claim that he was a wonderful artist because he felt this pain. This is thought to be what provoked him to use such bright colors. Instead of starting with a dull base, he started with a bright one and just increased from there, making all details stand out no matter the importance. This is what gives starry night one of its many charms, the colors all stand out, even the ones in the background, it is as if the black of the sky is brighter is a brighter black. The yellows of the sky are contrasted from the blacks only by color and not by their shade of brightness.
