Caribbean countries, their cultures, and architecture are heavily influenced by European colonization. This image of the Fortress of Columbus (Alcazar de Colón) represents the colonial period that shaped Caribbean identity and is a big part of our legacy.

Legacy - Caonabo Park

This is an image of the cacique or chieftain Caonabo, who was one of the principal caciques on our island by the time of Christopher Columbus' arrival, and his cacicazgo or chiefdom was Maguana, most likely where the municipality San Juan de la Maguana is located now. Caonabo Park is located right at the town's entrance and it is an homage to all the cacicazgos and Taíno life, featuring a replica of the Corral de los Indios, an important ceremonial monument. A large part of my family is from San Juan, and every time we drive by Caonabo Park, it makes me think of our past. Just as it inspired me and inspired the creation of Caonabo Park, I am sure our Taíno legacy and our island's and all other islands in the West Indies' pre-colonial past inspired Caribbean authors and provoked the exploration of our taíno legacy, traditions, and identity through literature.

Landscape and lifestyle - Horses on a field

This is a picture taken of horses roaming on a farm field on the outskirts of San Juan de la Maguana, where most people's lives revolve around growing crops and raising animals. Caribbean countries have this in common: the rural working class and their dedication to agriculture and livestock. Outside the city, this way of life defines much of the Dominican Republic's identity, reflecting the roots and traditions that are common throughout the Caribbean region.

Situation 1: Tropical Weather, Hurricanes

Living in the Caribbean comes with perks, like the tropical climate, but also comes with cons, such as, ironically, the tropical climate. The tropical climate of the region offers warm weather all year round, however, this same weather also brings challenges, particularly the destructive force of hurricanes. Through the passing of the years, these storms have become stronger and more frequent, leaving behind lost lives and homes and destroying natural landscapes. Caribbean writers can be inspired by the contrast between the beautiful yet unpredictable tropical weather of the region in their writings to recount stories of loss and resilience. Additionally, hurricanes often reveal social disparities, as vulnerable communities such as those that live near rivers or dams and do not have homes suited to overcome such weather, bear the brunt of their impact. These situations can be used by Caribbean authors to critique inequality between social classes and the lack of support from the government to those who need it most.

Situation 2: Carnivals

If there's anything that showcases the blend of culture, race, and tradition in the Dominican Republic, it's the annual carnival. Carnivals celebrate the Caribbean's vibrant culture through music, dance, and costumes, rooted in African and European traditions. Writers can find inspiration in these festivities to address deeper themes post-colonial identity, and the celebration of cultural heritage.
