Optimistic
“And you—ain’t you bitter, man? Ain’t you just about had it yet? Don’t you see no stars gleaming that you can’t reach out and grab? … Here I am a giant—surrounded by ants. Ants who can’t even understand what it is the giant is talking about” (p. 85)

Walter is a very determined and optimistic person. That is a good characteristic to have because that means you won't give up on whatever you'r dream is, In Walter's case it is getting the money so he can open up the liquor store.

I think that Walter is a very good person but he is also foolish with the things that he does. Towards the end of the book he takes his sister's money for college so he can open up the liquor buissness but it dosen't work out as planned. His "friend" ditches walter and takes the money so that means that bassically mean that he took Beneatha's money for no reason.

In this picture it looks like the dog is very lonely. Just like in the story Walter feels like he is all by himself. He feels nobody listens to him. He also feels like nobody every takes his side. He thinks his wife Ruth is betraying him because she does not try to help him get the liquor store.

“I see no changes, wake up in the morning and I ask myself:
‘Is life worth living? Should I blast myself?’
I’m tired of being poor and, even worse, I’m black
My stomach hurts so I’m looking for a purse to snatch
Cops give a damn about a negro
Pull the trigger, kill a n***a, he’s a hero
“Give the crack to the kids: who the hell cares?
One less hungry mouth on the welfare!”

Tupac "Changes"

This song is about how a black man in poverty. For example, we know this when he says "Give the crack to the kids who the hell cares...". Walter is in poverty and he wants to get out. Society puts a label on black men saying that they "rob" people and are theives but in reality we are kind of the same

A theme in ARITS is that poverty can make people do desperate things. In the story Walter says “I have been married eleven years and I got a boy who sleeps in the livingroom -- and all I got to give him is stories about how rich white people live…” p. 34. Walter dosent want to be poor anymore so he trys to invest in a liquor store. He has to take a few risk to try to acheive his dreams but it dosent turn out well for him. This shows how poverty can make people do things they don't want to do but they don't want to be in poverty any
