Babies should be swabbed with a vaginal wipe so that their microbiome can be more diverse because the vagina holds a lot more microbes than the skin (which is where a c-section baby would get its microbes). This is because the vagina is much more habitable than the skin for microbes.

Yes- babies should be wiped. Though it can spread disease, mothers should be routinely screened before the procedure (like they did in the test study) and everything should be okay (especially considering this is just a means to an end with a probiotic). The pros of long term health benefits and a more diverse microbiome outweigh the cons.

Babies should be exposed to vaginal microbes. Although it can spread infection, testing the mothers beforehand can prevent hospitals from swabbing babies with mothers carrying disease, and know its safe to expose baby's to healthy mothers. The mothers vaginal microbes hold great benefits to baby's immune systems such as combating obesity, asthma, and allergies. The benefits outweigh the risks.

I think that babies should only be exposed to vaginal wiping in a research area and if the mother has already been tested for vaginal infections and anything that could cause harm to the baby. I think that because evidence shows that the mothers vaginal microbes only help the baby for a couple of months, and there are other ways for mothers to provide healthy microbes (breast-feeding), so I think normal C-sections should continue until more research is done on it and proved healthy/beneficial and safe for the baby

Yes, I think C-section babies should get wiped down with vagina microbes. As Tara said, although it can spread infection, if we test the mothers before the C-section to see if she carries any genital diseases, it would prevent the disease from getting to the baby. Vaginal microbes have many good benefits such as strengthens the immune system, or combating asthma, allergies and obesities. In my opinion, the benefits outweigh the risks. Though it is okay if a baby does not get swabbed.

I think until further research is done on this specific topic mothers should not do vaginal wipes. The risks of diseases that could be transmitted by it are, in my opinion, worse than the ones it "can" combat. There is not enough study to prove it beneficial yet. With time the procedure will become safer and better understood.

I don’t think that babies should be wiped. It is proven that babies who are born via c-section eventually develop the microbes they need and have a normal immune system. These wipes have a risk of transferring diseases from the mother to the baby which could kill them. Tests for these diseases are not always accurate and can compromise the babies' wellbeing. The wipes might have a slight positive effect on the baby but not enough to outway the risk of death, disease, and permanent damage. Even though babies born via c-section might have a larger risk for getting allergies, asthma, and more, wiping the baby does not confirm that the risk will go away and many c-section babies are not affected by those at all. The potential risk of harming the baby is not worth the risk to protect the baby against a slightly higher risk of other diseases. Also the wiping does not always provide the baby with all the microbes they need and are not always successful.

It is also easy to do which makes it even more dangerous since it doesn’t necessarily have to be done by a medical professional.

babies should get wiped with microbes as it can benefit them in their years of growing, however, there can be some negative outcomes if not done correctly for instance if the mother has an std or an infection it wouldnt be smart to do this for the baby otherwise yes i think babies should get wiped down with their mothers microbes.

I think this is a very controversial argument, however I genuinely think we shouldn't risk all the small issues that may come out of this experiment. Although the experiment is harmless it still doesn't change the small percentage of the child obtaining some type of disease. In the end the experiment is still not confirmed to have any effectiveness on the fetus. So why try if your child has that 1% chance of being exposed to something out of collected data.

Yes, C-Section babies should be swabbed with vaginal microbes. Doing this helps the infant's microbiome grow at a faster rate & will protect it against disease. However, parents who want to swab their babies after undergoing a C-Section should get tested to make sure that they won't be passing any disease on to their child.

I don't feel like its very necessary. Vaginal wiping also doesn't always work so in reality there isn't a guarantee that a baby born with C-Section will get those vaginal microbes anyways. There are also results that show that even if babies born with C-Section do get those vaginal microbes, they don’t also stick around. There are many reasons why vaginal wipes could be beneficial but like an article said sometimes the good doesn't outweigh all the bad that can happen with exposing a C-Section baby to it’s mother’s vaginal microbes,

I honestly don't know. There can be a lot of benefits to vaginal wipes as it can provide a strong foundation for a baby’s microbiome, however, there is no conclusive research that determines if these changes provide drastically different long-term results, compared to a c-section baby who is not swabbed. I think it should be up to the mother and the current conditions of the pregnancy; not necessary, but an option to mothers who think their child may need it.

If they won't end up providing babies with beneficial microbes for more than a month, it's not worth exposing the newborn to harmful bacteria and viruses they wouldn't have been exposed to before. If it is going to be done, I think it should only happen professionally at hospitals, to give the baby a better chance of avoiding harm.
