Outer: Made up of the the visible portion of the ear and is the initial pathway for sound waves. Can be divided into:

• Pinna (Auricle): The cartilaginous structure on the side of the head that helps to capture sound waves and direct them into the ear canal.

• Ear Canal (External Auditory Meatus): The tube that carries sound waves from the pinna to the eardrum. It also helps to protect the middle and inner ears from foreign objects, where earwax is found.

• Eardrum (Tympanic Membrane): A thin membrane that vibrates when sound waves reach it, transmitting these vibrations to the middle ear.

Middle: An air-filled cavity that amplifies and transmits sound wave vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear. Made up of:

• Ossicles: The three tiny bones in the middle ear individually called the Malleus (Hammer), Incus (Anvil), and Stapes (Stirrup) which is the smallest bone in the body. Responsible for amplifying and transmitting sound vibrations.

• Eustachian Tube: A canal that connects the middle ear to the back of the throat. It helps equalize air pressure on both sides of the eardrum, which is crucial for proper hearing function.

Inner: contains the sensory organs for hearing and balance. It contains the following:

• Cochlea: A spiral-shaped, fluid-filled structure that converts various sound frequencies into electrical signals that are sent to the brain via the auditory nerve. It contains the organ of Corti, which houses hair cells that respond to movements with electrical impulses.

• Vestibular System: The system responsible for maintaining balance and spatial orientation. It includes the Semicircular Canals (Labyrinth) which are three looped tubes that detect rotational movements of the head, and the Vestibule which is the central part of the bony structure and includes the utricle and saccule. These structures detect linear movements and external gravitational forces.

• Auditory Nerve (Cochlear Nerve): Pair of nerves that carry electrical signals from the cochlea to the brain, allowing for the perception of sound while relaying information about positioning and movement.

Ear Infection (Otitis): The most common ear disorder, occurs when there is a foreign body that causes inflammation in any part of the ear. It can cause discomfort, pain, fluid discharge, fevers, and in severe cases hearing loss. Treatments can include antibiotics and steroids to combat inflammation.

Tinnitus: A condition in which there is a perception of sound which has no real external source. Various phantom sounds can be heard in either or both ears. Although no single cause is known yet, treatments can include sound therapy and behavioral therapy to improve quality of life.

Ménière’s disease: A chronic disorder of the inner ear caused by a buildup of fluid, characterized by episodic vertigo, tinnitus, congestion and hearing loss, usually in one ear. Treatments include medications to control vertigo, dietary restrictions, ear injections, and in severe cases surgery.
