  • Also called episcopacy (from Greek word episkopos, meaning “overseer”)
  • Possess the fullness of the sacrament of Holy Orders, for they have received the full authority that the Church gave to the Twelve
  • Only ones allowed to confer the Sacrament of Holy Orders
  • The bishops exercise their care “by ruling well their own Churches as portions of the universal Church,” and so contributing “to the welfare of the whole Mystical Body, which, from another point of view, is a corporate body of Churches” 
  • Each bishop is entrusted to a specific diocese in which he acts as Christ’s chosen representative and the legitimate pastor of all the faithful within the diocese
  • Responsible for unity within diocese, celebration of the Sacraments, and teaching/governing of the flock entrusted to his care
