This week, we learned about the difference between ibadah khusus and ibadah umum, and how both are important in our journey to gain hikmah (wisdom).

Ibadah Khusus – involves the pillars of Islam like:

Solat: reminds us of Allah and shows our gratitude and fear of Him (Surah Al-Ankabut).

Puasa: helps control our desires, improves our health, and teaches us to be grateful.

Zakat: purifies our wealth, helps fellow Muslims, and trains us to avoid greed (Surah At-Taubah).

Haji: teaches self-discipline, obedience to Allah, and increases gratitude.

Ibadah Umum – refers to daily actions (like studying) done with the intention (niat) for the sake of Allah. As long as our intention is pure, it becomes an act of worship and we will be rewarded.

Related with Ihsan:

Ihsan means to worship Allah as if we see Him, and knowing that He sees us. When we have this awareness, we become more motivated and sincere in everything we do.

Reflection:

This topic reminded me that niat is the foundation of everything. It reflects our sincerity and helps us gain hikmah in our actions. When we do things for Allah, we’ll feel more focused, grateful, and disciplined in life.

This week, we focused on the wisdom behind acts of worship (hikmah ibadah) in Islam. Ibadah is not a human invention , it is prescribed by Allah, as proven in several verses in the Qur’an.

Surah Al-‘Ankabut, ayat 45:

This verse shows that solat is from Allah, not created by humans. Solat helps us stay away from evil and immoral acts like zina. It trains us to remember Allah constantly and be mindful of our actions.

Surah Al-Baqarah, ayat 183 – About Puasa:

Allah commands believers to fast in Ramadan.Fasting was also prescribed to previous nations. The main hikmah of fasting is to become more God-conscious (taqwa).

This verse reminds us that puasa brings us closer to Allah and is a form of worship that cleanses the soul.

Surah At-Taubah, ayat 103 – About Zakat:

This verse teaches that zakat is obligatory and its wisdom is to:

Purify our wealth,Clean it from haram sources,Train us to be sincere and generous.

Allah knows everything we give and our intentions behind it.

Surah Al-Baqarah, ayat 197 – About Hajj:

Hajj can only be performed during specific months (Zulhijjah).

This verse teaches that during Hajj, we must:

Avoid arguments and harsh speech,

Practice patience and discipline.

It also reminds us that taqwa is the main goal of Hajj, and Allah knows all that we do.

Reflection

From all these acts of worship, we can see that ibadah:

Cleanses the heart and soul,

Builds discipline and gratitude, and Brings us closer to Allah.

Each form of ibadah has deep wisdom (hikmah) that shapes us into better Muslims.

W3: PREPARATION SALAH WITH KHUSYUK [9/5]

This week, we focused on how to prepare for salah (prayer) with khusyuk, which means praying with full focus, humility, and sincerity. Khusyuk helps us connect with Allah and makes our prayer more meaningful.

Conditions for Valid Salah (Syarat Sah Solat)

Before performing salah, these conditions must be fulfilled:

1. Faith (iman) – Must be a Muslim.

2. Sanity (aql) – Must be of sound mind.

3. Covering the aurah – Both men and women must cover their awrah properly.

4. Facing the Qiblah – Salah must be done facing the Kaabah in Makkah.

Pillars of Salah (Rukun Solat)

These are the essentials of prayer. Without them, salah is invalid. Examples include:

Intention (niyyah)

Takbiratul ihram (opening takbir)

Standing (if able)

Reciting Al-Fatihah

Rukuk (bowing)

Sujud (prostration)

Sitting between the two sujud

Final Tashahhud

Ending with salam

Order (tartib)

Jama’ & Qasar Prayers

Special rulings for travellers (musafir):

Jama’ Prayer:

Combining two prayers in one time

Examples: Zohor + Asar, Maghrib + Isyak

Jama’ Taqdim (early) or Jama’ Ta’khir (delayed)

Qasar Prayer:

Shortening 4-rakaat prayers to 2 rakaat

Applies to Zohor, Asar, and Isyak only

These are a gift from Allah, to make worship easier for His servants while travelling.

Rawatib Sunnah Prayers:

Performed before or after the five daily prayers

Example: 2 rakaat before Subuh, 2 rakaat after Maghrib

It helps complete and perfect our obligatory prayers.

Witir Prayer:

A highly encouraged sunnah prayer done after Isyak

Usually prayed in 1, 3, or 5 rakaat

It is the closing prayer of the night and especially recommended in Ramadan

Reflection:

Salah is not just about physical movements. It’s a deep spiritual connection with Allah. When we understand the conditions, pillars, and different types of prayer, we become more prepared to perform salah with true khusyuk, and our hearts will feel peace.

This week we reflected on the virtues and values that come from performing salah with full focus and humility (khusyuk). Khusyuk is not always easy, but it makes our worship more sincere and meaningful.

Things that prevent khusyuk:

1. Thinking about other things during prayer (distractions)

2. Was-was (doubts and unnecessary worry)

3. Praying in a rush or without preparation

4. Hunger or thirst while food is already served

Ways to achieve khusyuk:

1. Pray at the beginning of the time, don’t delay until last minute

2. Prepare before salah like take wudhu calmly, wear clean clothes

3. Avoid praying when food is served, eat first to focus better

4. Understand the meanings of the recitations in salah

5. Focus your heart by remembering you're standing before Allah

Virtues and Values from Salah with Khusyuk:

1. Obedience to Allah

Salah trains us to follow Allah’s commands consistently.

2. Discipline & Time Management

Performing five prayers daily builds strong discipline.

3. Spiritual Jihad

Fighting laziness and distractions during prayer is a form of jihad (a struggle for Allah.)

4. Humility (tawadhu')

In sujud, we lower ourselves, remembering we are only servants of Allah.

5. Purification of the heart

A khusyuk prayer helps clean our hearts from arrogance, ego, and laziness.

6. Increased mindfulness of Allah (taqwa)

Khusyuk makes us more aware that Allah is watching us.

7. Inner peace and calmness

A focused salah gives comfort and peace to the heart. As in Surah ar-Ra’d(13:28) :

“Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.”

8. Becoming a better Muslim

Salah with khusyuk helps shape our akhlaq and makes us more patient and kind.

Reflection:

When we pray with khusyuk, it is as if we are seeing Allah, or at least knowing that He sees us. It turns an ordinary routine into a beautiful spiritual moment. Khusyuk salah brings us closer to becoming the best version of ourselves like humble, focused, and sincere servants of Allah.

W5: VIRTUES FOUND IN SAWM (FASTING) [30/5]

Fasting in Islam is not just about staying away from food and drink but it is a spiritual training that helps us become better Muslims, inside and out. It teaches us to control our desires, purify our hearts, and become closer to Allah.

Taqwa (God-Consciousness):

In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 183, Allah tells us that fasting is a way to gain taqwa – being aware of Allah at all times, even when we’re alone. It reminds us that Allah is always watching, and this helps us think twice before doing anything wrong.

Self-Control and Discipline:

Fasting teaches us how to be strong and patient. We learn to hold back from things we normally do, even things that are halal like eating or drinking. This practice helps us control our emotions and desires in daily life too.

Strengthening Our Relationship with Allah:

Fasting is a special ibadah done just for Allah. It’s a time to increase our du’a, reflection, and connection with Him. The more sincere we are, the closer we feel to Allah.

Gratitude and Appreciation:

When we finally break our fast, even a sip of water or a date feels amazing. Fasting teaches us to appreciate the small blessings in life. It opens our hearts to be more thankful and humble.

Reflection:

Sawm is more than hunger but it is a chance to cleanse our heart, grow spiritually, and renew our purpose as servants of Allah. It helps shape us into more patient, grateful, and mindful individuals.

In Islam, both zakat and sadaqah are forms of charity, but they are different in purpose and reward. Zakat is obligatory, while sadaqah is voluntary. Both are very powerful ways to earn Allah’s pleasure and help others in need.

Zakat – Purifying Our Wealth

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam, and it’s wajib (compulsory) for Muslims who meet the conditions.

Zakat purifies your wealth and your heart.

It also helps close the gap between the rich and the poor.

Verse reference: Surah At-Taubah, verse 103 – “Take from their wealth a charity to purify them…”

Sadaqah – Charity From the Heart

Sadaqah is a voluntary act of kindness done with sincerity. It’s not limited to money – it can be anything that benefits others.

Examples of Sadaqah:

Smiling at others

Helping someone with their work

Planting a tree or feeding animals

Removing harm from the road

Giving directions to someone who is lost

Even the smallest good action, when done for Allah, becomes sadaqah.

Adab in Giving Sadaqah:

1. Give only for Allah, not to show off.

2. Give what you love most, not things you wouldn’t want for yourself.

3. Give with kindness, don’t hurt the feelings of the receiver.

4. Keep it secret if possible, to protect your sincerity.

Virtues of Sadaqah & Zakat:

Earn Allah’s pleasure and reward

Soften the heart and increase empathy

Remove sins and bring blessings (barakah)

Help create a caring and united ummah

Protect from calamity (sadaqah extinguishes sins like water puts out fire – Hadith)

Reflection:

Zakat cleans your wealth, and sadaqah beautifies your soul.

Sadaqah teaches us that giving isn’t always about money,it’s about love, sincerity, and compassion. When done properly, these acts bring us closer to Allah and help make the world a better place, one kind gesture at a time.

Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, and every Muslim must perform it at least once in their lifetime but only if they are able, both physically and financially. This shows how Islam is a religion of mercy and not a burden to its followers (rahmatan lil alamin).

The Command of Allah:

The obligation of Hajj is mentioned in the Qur’an:

"And complete the Hajj and Umrah for the sake of Allah" (Surah Al-Baqarah:196)

This shows that Hajj and Umrah must be done sincerely for Allah.

Renewal of Faith (Iman):

Going to the holy land (Makkah) softens the heart and increases our love for Allah.

Every step taken during Hajj or Umrah brings us spiritually closer to Him.

Seeing the Kaabah and being with millions of Muslims reminds us that we are all equal in the eyes of Allah.

Purification of the Soul:

Hajj is not just about walking or rituals it is a spiritual journey.

It helps us reflect on our life, seek forgiveness, and renew our intentions.

After completing Hajj, many people feel like they are starting fresh like a clean slate.

Total Submission to Allah:

Some parts of Hajj may not make sense logically (like stoning the Jamrah or wearing only two pieces of cloth), but we still do it because Allah commands it.

This teaches us full obedience and trust in Allah without questioning.

Reflection:

Hajj and Umrah remind us that we are servants of Allah, and this life is only temporary. The journey changes a person inside and out, and brings a deeper connection with Allah SWT. It is a beautiful opportunity to purify the soul, increase iman, and practice full submission to the Creator.
