Two days prior on the 15th of April 1961 trained Cubans piloted three planes and bombed two Cuban air bases. Once the troops arrived on the 17th they were far outnumbered and outgunned as Fidel Castro was prepared for an attack and we surrendered quite quickly. There was many things leading up to the failed invasion including Castro's diplomatic relationship with the Soviets,  our discontinued relationship with the island, and his rule reducing the United State's power and impact on Cuba. John F. Kennedy was in the U.S and Nikita Khrushchev’s was in the Soviet Union during the standoff. The U.S felt the national security was threatened by the Soviets missiles located on the island of Cuba so they decided to create a blockade. After they created the naval blockade the USSR realized the U.S was willing to do anything to neutralize these threats and thus a 13-day standoff began as they scared each other and the rest of the world as they almost began a nuclear war. The U.S thought the missiles were there because of the Bay of Pigs invasion and wanted to prevent anymore hostile U.S attacks.
