New Zeland was discovered in 950 a.c. by the Kupe people who named it "Land of the Long White Cloud" in the Maori language. Since then, several people have visited the brand new land, like Polynesians and Dutchmen. The name New Zeland comes from the dutch explorer Abel Tasman's homeland Nieuw Zeeland despite the fact that he didn't land because of the Maori hostility. But in 1769 the british navigator captain James Cook started the colonization of the country by the european nation. After almost two centuries of treaties and conflicts the New Zealanders conquered their independence in 1947, but was still a part of the British Comunity.
