This morning we set up our new padlets and and discussed film genres and camera angles such as wide shot, close ups and tilt.. In the afternoon we then had a tutorial on camera angles, white balance, and exposure and how use them in manual and automatic modes which was useful, we didn't use them last year but plan on using them for future work. We then tested them out on campus and tried a verity of shots and angles, I think we did well as a group (Me Jayne, Kirsten and Chloe) we caught on quickly and worked well as a team. The picture below is of me and Kirsten I'm the ginger one on the floor holding the camera.

This morning we had a meeting (our whole class) and looked at the photos we took yesterday and made points about if they we're good or not. Also if there was improvements to be made on the shots. After this we got given a script, and the task to add in our own shots to the script and then perform it and record with the camera. Before this we drew up a storyboard and wrote down a shortlist this will be on my work padlet.

Earlier in the day we filmed the scene in a corridor, and brought a sofa from another classroom, since the scene needed a sofa as it was the main setting for all the scenes. The group was made up of Me, Jayne, Chloe, and Kirsten. Below is a collage of our day, I was an actor this time, honestly it was bit difficult since it was out of my comfort zone but we still managed to film it all. I did forget lines but we wrote them down on a bit of paper for someone to hold, so I could read off of it. We had problems with our camera and tri-pod since our camera wouldn't fit into the tripod due to someone else using it previously [We needed to re-adjust the bottom for it to fit properally and safely] We will bear this in mind next time we film.

This morning we started by doing advert deconstructions, we picked adverts and took screenshots and explained how they were effective and the shots they used and why. After lunch we then moved on to looking at jobs such as Camera operators to see the nessecery skills and job reqirements needed to apply for that job and put a list of sources of where we found this information. After this our techniqual teacher Dave took us in small groups to the motion room, to do a risk assesment, Dave set up a small set for us to inspect, which we had to say whats wrong with the set up, e.g. There was a glove on top of the lighting eqiupment, which could catch fire as the lights can get very hot. We then had to go back to our Macs and write up what we found into the template given. Also on how an incident could be prevented and what to do if a problem such as fire in the studio should occour, and put emergency contacts such as 999 and 111 at the bottom for refrence. [The picture below is of the set-up that Dave put together, as you can see the open water bottle near camera equipment was one of the faults with the set up]

First we had a meeting on student representivies and got to know eachother in our classes. Then after break we spoke about semiotics (signified and signifier) Which is about how we view object being described and what the object represents. e.g. Traffic lights seeing the red light as "stop" and the green light as "good or go". I found this interesting and useful and will use this in my later projects since I did not know about this before. It was an interesting lesson. In our afternoons lesson we had a tutorial with Dave teaching us about low-key and high-key lighting. The different types of lighting such as soft box and spotlight. We also learned about 3 point lighting and tried it out for ourselves with the DSLRS. We also had a go at setting up three point lighting and spoke about all the equipment we have available in the department.

After this we got shown an example of deconstructing this advert into its primary components this will help me with my deconstructions and research later on.

Today we went with our technical advisor Dave, to test out lighting in the photo studio here are some pictures that we took different types of lighting such as high and low key lighting, we used the softboxes and we used a professional camera to shoot this so we learned a lot about setting up backgrounds and lighting. Which will help us with our current advert project and we will use the techniques we have learnt. We also discussed the usefulness of using white backdrops and black backdrops for lighting, and spoke about how it can change the scene entirely. We then did some more research with our deconstruction of educational posters ( 2D social action ads) I looked at some THINK! and smoking advertisements. Afterwards we spoke about our idea and drew up our visual mind map using pictures and words to get our idea across. Our idea is going to be based around domestic abuse. Which will be wrote up later on. Our group worked well although some were quieter than others we all had a chance to put our ideas in I think this project will be fun and my role is the lighting and prop designer, it's something I've never done before but I'm confident I'll have fun and learn new ways to advertise. We are hoping to try out our ideas for the photography part of our advert and the film based part of it, I think it'll be exciting to try out these new things and explore different ways of lighting, and interprating serious topics.

Today we did a case study on developing a contextual awareness for this we had to, compare advertisements between different cultures for example, clothes adverts in Saudi Arabia wouldn't be as exposed as say America. In our study we had to talk about nature and purpose of the advert, the target audience and the visual communication. We also mentioned. written communication, semiotic communication, and reception theory. For this bit of work I found it a bit challenging to get into it, I had to ask what semiotic meant again due to me forgetting about what it was, I also had to ask about reception theory since we only spent one lesson on it. We also compare both of the adverts and write our overall opinion on it.
.

Today we had a small talk with our teacher about how different research methods and techniques are used for media production. We spoke about the difference between Qualitative data and Quantitative, and that we need both for Primary and Secondary research. Also we learnt how to carry out our own primary research and got asked to do a questionnaire based on our secondary research (2D and video advertisements on social action projects mainly). I found new ways of presenting findings such as pie charts/bar graphs instead of a tally chart, I will keep this in mind when it comes to asking people about our ideas, and use questionnaires effectively.

Then we had a practical with Dave where we went though how to use premier pro and then we tried it out on our macs we learnt how to cut scenes and also how to adjust lighting ect. We then took our footage off of the cameras and put it into premier pro and put it into categories. However I needed to push myself a bit further within the editing stage.

I think it could've been improved with a bit of background music having seen other peoples work. Note: Me and Jaynes edited version of the room is on the work padlet.

Today we looked at Voxpops and survey monkey. First we had a meeting with our tech teacher Dave about how to go about vox pops and went though our checklist for these units. We then went out to the town and did our voxpops. We all had roles, Mine was to write down what the person said incase the audio malfunctioned also to try and get more people to come over. I didn't do so well at this since I am quite shy when it comes to talking to stangers. Kirsten did this as well and found talking to people easier than I did. Jayne asked them the questions and showed them the 2D print based adverts, and Chloe was on camera recording them. We did this for about 30mins and interviewed 3 people in total (across 2 interviews). It was hard since people didn't either want to be filmed or weren't intrested/too busy. This had an impact on our voxpops due to the fact we couldn't get many people. I think a larger group of scouters and a banner would help and also make us look more friendly. I think that voxpops are a bad way of getting data personally for things since you're not garenteed anyone will be able or up for an interview. After this we did our survey monkeys (Online survey), I personally had some trouble due to the app not working sometimes it took an hour to get our questionnaire done and posted to social media, it also didn't help on how we didn't really know how it was formatted so we had to do it over a few times until we got the result that we wanted. Lastly we edited our voxpops, we just faded out the video and audio and cut out some parts which we're either irrelevent or didn't make sense. I think today went okay, we did have some troubles but we got through it eventually. Picture below is of us all doing the vox pops - Jayne - Blounde hair. Me: wearing all black and ginger hair. Kirsten - Red shirt, and Chloe took pictures.

We then got given a script and shot list to make a series of short scenes, We divided roles easily (I held the Shotgun microphone). However we came across a difficulty the person who was using the TasCAM to record the sound through the shotgun microphone didn't press record so we needed to shoot again. Also our director didn't really know what was going on and didn't seem at all interested in the task.

Today we have been touching up our pre-production worksheets and planning, we also then went to drama and booked some actors. However they could only be available on Wednesday after 3:00pm so we decided to film then until 5pm. The pre-production went quite quickly and was done efficently however only three people in the group were doing work [ Me, Chloe, and Callum] After lunchtime me and Chloe decided to write our location relese fourms out and get Delta [Head of our department] to sign it, we also told the others to go set up in J113 but our producer persisted to say we needed to be there even though we'd only be 5mins in total so we did the fourm later, however this was quite an annoyance for us since he didn't understand that we couldn't do it on an Ipad while filming too, we listened but we were in a bit of a disagreement. We also then wrote an equipment list for them to go collect and bring to J113 for the test shoot. When we got to the room our group started to complain that the room was too small and wasn't right even though he has seen the room previously. Whatever we suggested he said it wasn't going to work and said its a waste of time even though we even suggested in spending some spare time of our own days off to do them. Ben didn't do much during the test shoot he sat there holding the boom pole and only moved the light when he was told to, we asked him to get some A2 paper for us and he took 5 minutes because he brought his friend to the room and was talking to him all that time. When we were finished with filming we came up and I uploaded the footage to my pendrive while Chloe wrote up the room relese fourm, we then are editing this footage on Wednesday to test things out.

Below is our test shots we edited it the other day. We also spoke about ways to do it and ideas. https://youtu.be/GIzY9ZhdTKw

NOTE: If you click on the image and then click "view original" in the top right corner you can zoom into this image for easy reading.

Today we arranged to do our filming we made sure everything was booked e.g. Room release forms were signed by a photography teacher so we could have the room for after 3:00pm. However last night in our facebook group chat (so we can keep in touch over the production easier) I said I couldn't bring white sheets for our filming because they went into the wash much later on than expected so we asked if anyone in the group could bring anything but Callum replied uncooperativly saying we don't need this or that even though we discussed earlier that we needed them, why and agreed to them and was being unhelpful in the comments he was making. Curtis suggested we go up to art department to see if they have some white sheets for morge Scene and it was a good idea so we thanked him. This morning we asked politely if Callum,Ben, and Curtis would go get the sheets from the art dept, since we didn't know where it was and Callum refused in a huff, because he was trying to be "cool" infront of this friends and was rude about it saying don't tell me what to do even though Chloe is the producer.

When we realised he wouldn't listen and refuse we asked the other two in our group to go see if they could get some sheets. When they got back we said we're going to get the room sheets signed and said we'd be back in 10-15mins, but when we came back we found out that they told a teacher when asked where we were that they didn't know, "they ditched us" and said they had no idea where we went. We then went around trying to find Dave (Our techniqual advisor) to sign our equipment sheets, but he was busy so me and Chloe went to the Uni building to to try and find Brendon to sign it since he is another techniqual person and was named on the sheet and we couldn't find him so we went back up to our building. We found that the boys were just on their phones and haven't done anything. They then told us that we are not using a green screen even though we never spoke about this yet, we explained that it would be unnessecary but they didn't listen and ignored us. Leila came over and we had a meeting where we explained difficulties within the group.

After lunch time me and Chloe went back up to J building to see Tom, in order to get our location permission forms signed by him. To show Dave that we have permission to use J113. Then Dave called another team meeting with us to see how every group was getting on. He advised us that we should let Callum have more creative input that he so far hadn't and we let them work on the shot list with Ben and Curtis (a new more written up one). Me and Chloe went with Dave to book equipment for later on, we had a talk about our team truthfully with him, and he said there's not a lot he could do. Later on at 2:45pm we told our group we were going to collect our actors at the agreed time of (3:00pm) and they should finish up and set up the studio while we were away, So Curtis could practice with the DSLR camera that he hadn't used before. When meeting with our actors we found our that two were missing but they other drama students found replacements easily. We also ran into Jayne and Kirsten who volunteered to be actors as well when they finished their day. Then Jayne and Kirsten took the girls to get food and drink since they just got out of classes and then brought them up to J113. We then asked Dave of he could come up in half an hour to bring us the spare table for the morgue scene. We then found out that we needed a few more permission forums for the actors so Chloe went downstairs and printed some more out for them to sign.

Dave came in and suggested we changed the lights from soft boxes to LEDS. Since they get far too hot in that tiny room, we agreed and changed the lights, me and Chloe went down to get the lights and set them up in the room.

We then started to film and Chloe was on the clapper board and I was an actor, and the rest were in their roles. Callum tended to say "Go" instead of "action" but it's an easy mistake. He needed to be louder when he cut because we couldn't hear him half of the time. I directed people as well at times telling them what we were doing at the time. I think the party scene went well overall but a bit noisy to say the least.

It took us a while to film the morgue scene due to fits of laughing but it was quite funny watching the actors rise up from the "dead". When we finished the boys took some of the equipment back, me and Chloe tidied the room and took the remaining equipment back to the storage.

NOTE: If you click on the image and then click "view original" in the top right corner you can zoom into this image for easy reading.

Chloe is not in due to being on Holiday

Today we continued with editing and had a minuets of meeting , in the first hour Callum worked well however after lunchtime, he became more offset on talking to his friends and often sat there talking while I was trying to ask him if it was okay or to his standard. He kept changing his mind which was fine however he kept getting distracted and we also moved MACS after lunch since there wasn't any room for him due to other groups taking the space. So he moved next to his friends, I asked for us to swap seats so he isn't next to his friends and can focus on editing with me (supervising) but he moved the mouse to the other side of the keyboard USB which made it difficult so type since the wire went across the keyboard and I'm not left handed, he also was distracted so when I asked him to plug my USB into the specifically computer he plugged it into the USB slot, which makes its transfer rate worse so I ejected the memory stick and plugged it into the back of the MAC and then plugged the mouse back into the right side of the keyboard.

Curtis and Ben: they went missing and didn't come back much only once to see what we've done, (well Ben did) but they were missing all day.

Today I edited:

Colour correction
Stobe lighting effect added
Adding music
Adjusting sound levels of all clips

And alot of rendering which slowed down the process

NOTE: If you click on the image and then click "view original" in the top right corner you can zoom into this image for easy reading, and I made a mistake by putting the wrong meeting number in forgetting to change it from a previous save.

Today we spoke to Chloe since she was back about the edit and showed her what we have edited so far, she added in some useful points, and we changed bits that she didn't find to be useful/effective. We asked Curtis and Ben to start creating a questionarrie in order to get some feedback on our work later in the week. They did this well and came up with some good questions. During the edit we found that a certain part was a bit boring to watch and Dave suggested we add something else to it, e.g A shot of a bottle [alcohol] to make it more relevent to the topic that we are advertising, we also got to see how the track worked with the camera this was cool to see, and I'll keep this in mind for future productions. We asked Curtis and Ben to go film it and do some test shots, me and Chloe joined them after 15-20mins to see how they were doing. It went really well and I think the shot looked good, they did a brilliant job today. However Callum who went with us to the room in which Curtis and Ben were filming in, he said "I'd like to go back and edit now" so we said yes and he went to go edit by himself [I would've joined him as editor but I felt, like if we let him do some of it on his own or try some things he may come up with something good, but he instead went and chatted to his friends in the motion room not having touched the MAC.

Today we editied:
- Added and filmed a scene with a bottle to fill in a gap within the production.
- Changed the opacity of some scenes to make it more intresting
-added brightness and contrast to the bottle scene
-Blurred out the image of a car crash to put behind another image in the production.
-Have a transition between clips
- Deleted footage that was either un-useable anymore or not needed.
-Made sure the sound was turned down a lot more

Today we finished the editing, in the beginning Callum was there to over see the production but then went on to do other work so me and Chloe went on to edit ourselves. Curtis and Ben, we asked them to record some sound for us (them singing in a drunken way) for the video, since we couldn't find anything good online, although they went to record this, they moaned about having to do this simple task, they were saying that me and Chloe should "F*** Off" which was not professional at all. we asked them to name the file on the TasCam when they were done but they forgot to do this. Callum only came over once to check over how the edit was, he was quite rude to me demanding to see the video, We told him to wait a minuet since we we're finishing off a small part of the edit but he insisted to see it. When we showed him he went back to his own work.

What we edited:
-Chose sound effects such as - Walking, Scream, footsteps, laughing, car doors, ect.
-Finished off the car crash scene by completing the audio with some Foley of Ben and Curtis singing a christmas song to play before the crash as if the drunk people are singing it.
- Ensured all transitions are smooth and go well together
- We added music to the morgue scene which I really liked

I will keep these in mind, and if we have time on Friday [9th] we will make some of these changes and make the edit shorter. Now all we need to do is get some more feedback and do some questionairs and focus groups.

Today having finished our evaluations me and Chloe decided to do the edit the project yet again but make the changes we suggested that we would do if we had time left. We did this after tutorial. The edits we made were,

-removed the morgue scene
-removed rolling credits
- changed the message
-added a website helpline number for people to find out more information about the topic and get help if they're effected by the issues.

We found out that If you duplicate a clip on timeline it doesn't register with the original so you need to change the title or it reverts back to what the clip used to be. We will keep this in mind next time we do a message or add any credits ect... so always change the name of the item in the bin once dupicated to ensure of no complications

I think adding the website and information is good and more professional since if people are effected they can get help and get information on the site that is linked. The reviewed were very useful in telling us their opinions as viewers sinces with us the comments would've been biased. Since the audience can pick out faults

We are pleased that we made the changes as the people who gave us feedback were right and I'm happy with the result.
