Naming options for Parramatta’s new aquatic centre

On the 13th June the City of Parramatta Council posted a Facebook reminder to encourage the community of the LGA to contribute to the naming of the new Parramatta Aquatic & Leisure Centre.

As a local council it is important to consult with the community on major projects and this is particularly sensitive as the existing pool was demolished about 10 years ago to make way for the CommBank Stadium which left the area with no pool and many disgruntled citizens. The engagement activity is a way to make the community feel they are involved in the process.

As a community member I wanted to have a say in how the pool was named and also give feedback to others on the suggestions that they came up with. This is a transparent process so I can see the other names proposed and the votes that have accumulated on the popular options.

Success is measured by how the organisation takes on board the community feedback and if we see our ideas reflected in the names that get sent to Council for endorsement.

"How Google will spend $1M on the internet for you"

Which organisation or person did you engage?
Check My Ads, which is both a non-profit advertising watchdog and a brand safety/marketing consultancy founded by Nandini Jammi and Claire Atkin, who focus on the role of adtech and platforms in enabling misinformation.

What topic(s) did you engage about?
A recent post of theirs entitled Here's how Google will spend $1M on the internet for you. The topic is ultimately how Google/Aphabet, as the proprietor of the world's largest ad exchange, sustains "a cottage industry of disinformation operatives, money launderers and everyone else hacking away at our democracy".

When did the engagement occur?
In the morning, as coffee returned me to life.

Where did it occur? Which platform did you use?
LinkedIn. Saw the post shared in my news feed and reshared without commentary.

Why did you want to engage this person or organisation?
As a search marketing manager but also as a person interested in the world I'm compelled to read everything about Google/Alphabet because they're an incredibly powerful and important institution with a tremendous amount of influence on the world and they are also opaque and unaccountable, even to their corporate customers who've helped make them one of the most profitable companies in history.

What were your expected outcomes when you entered into the engagement?
No real expected outcome. Just the thought that others might find it interesting or good to know, maybe the thought that more folks should know about this. A lot of my connections on LinkedIn are in the digital marketing and particularly search marketing space.

How do you know if you were successful in your engagement?
I don't have any real way to measure whether my engagement was successful, but I also didn't necessarily have an objective or desired outcome either. I do feel I'm more likely to keep an eye out for CMA's future content.

Hey Siri, does Amazon Prime have a special on Echo Dots?

My first digital interaction was with Siri on my iPhone to ask about Amazon Prime deals. My second digital interaction was with the Amazon website.

I was enquiring about smart speakers featuring Alexa (sorry Siri). Then I used my MacBook Pro to enter the Amazon Prime website to find more information about these speakers and whether they were included in the Amazon Prime promotion on 12 July.

I was at home and I used my Chrome browser on my MacBook to enter the Amazon Prime search term. Then I searched 'Alexa speakers' and found a range of different smart speakers.

I was hoping that the smart speakers would be on special so I could buy it for my study. The reason I chose Alexa is because every other room in the house has Google Home and I sometimes the other speakers answer requests.

My expected outcome was to purchase the Alexa smart speaker, however (I have since learned) this speaker is called an Echo Dot. I noticed that the speaker also comes in a variant with a digital clock - which I was excited about because a) it was the SKU on special and b) 50% of my queries to smart speakers involve time/alarm related questions.

I was successful in this interaction because I bought an (even better than expected) smart speaker featuring Alexa that was $50 vs the regular price of $80. Also, Amazon recommended I also buy some charging ports which I did, so Amazon was successful also!
