In the Book, Jeannette's father tried to sneak her out of the hospital. He didn't like the way they were helping her daughter heal from her burn injuries. I chose this quote to show self-sufficiency because Jeannette's mother wanted to raise her children to be independent. So at a very young, She allowed her daughter to start cooking for themselves. In the eyes of the mother, This is being self-sufficient.
