A Japanese military squadron placed dynamite near a Mukden railway, detonating it and causing a minor explosion that did not damage the track. This served as justification for the immediate invasion of China in the eyes of Japan.

International analysis 1: This attack served as justification for Japan’s invasion of China, which meant it was wondered about internationally. Many counties questioned whether or not it was legitimate justification, and some countries and organizations even investigated the incident. Much of this wonderment was decreased by China’s response, which was seemingly non-existent. While Japan posed a great threat to China, the government was more concerned with expelling the Chinese communist party than repelling the Japanese.

It was fought between two main factions, the revolters, the Communist Party of China, and of course the Chinese government. The war lasted for nearly 10 years before the Japanese invaded China, when both factions came together to form the “Second United Front” an army for repelling the Japanese forces. 

International analysis 1: The communist party of China expelled the previous government after the battle of attrition was mostly won by the communists. While the communist party had won the war, they were still not recognized as the legitimate government of China by most of the world. It wasn’t until all the way in 1971 that the People’s Republic of China was admitted in the United Nations. Prior to this, the UN had recognized the Republic of China as the legitimate government.

The pact claimed that communist countries were under the direct control of a larger communist organization, known as the communist international. Both countries believed that the organization’s goal was to subdue or destroy all non-communist countries. This pact was signed by both countries in the name of preventing this widely believed fear. 


International analysis 1: From the point of view of the Soviet Union, this was a very direct blow, mainly stoked by Germany. The Soviet Union was not only one of the most powerful countries in the world, but were also one of the only communist states at the time of the agreement. Germany, prior to 1936, had been afraid of a war with the Soviet Union, and by signing this agreement, had tried to add security by allying with Japan. This was seen as a direct target by the Soviet Union, and further estranged them with both Japan and Germany.
