  • Heard tales of riches in the Andes Mountains in Peru which was the Inca empire
  • He helped lead several expeditions in search of that empire with de Almagro, and de Luque
  • In 1524 and 1526 both expeditions failed
  • In 1528 Pizarro returned to Spain to get support from the kings and they agreed
  • In 1530 he set out with Hernando de Soto through the system of Inca roads and bridges
  • He founded the city of Lima and he called this city Ciudad de los Reyes (City of Kings)

  • People of Panama did not think that Pizarro would succeed in conquering the Inca empire
  • The Inca leader Atahualpa was expecting an attack so he met Pizarro with a large army. Francisco retreated but lead a surprise attack the next day
  • Pizarro captured the Inca leader and other hostages and demanded a large ransom
  • He received thousands of pounds of gold and silver but then he killed the hostages anyway
  • The Inca empire collapsed and Spain became the richest and most powerful nation 
  • Spanish fought among themselves for the gold and riches
