There once was a little boy who was terrified of mice. He thought they were horrible, ugly creatures. One day, he decided to confront his fears by going down to the basement to have a good look at a mouse and see if it really was as scary as he thought. He went down the stairs, step by step, and in the basement... there it was! It was the cutest creature he had ever seen, with two round ears and a long tail. Just as he was going to move closer, there was a noise behind him. Thud! He turned around and saw that the neighbour’s cat had pushed the window open. When he turned back, the mouse had vanished! Disappointed, he went back upstairs and decided to go to the basement again the next day. But the same thing happened, so he tried again. It was the same the next day, and the next... but he was determined to make friends with the mouse. He even made up a rhyme about it.
In my house there is a mouse, (weave yarn around fingers, from pinkie to index) In the basement there are more. (weave yarn in the opposite direction)
Two round ears peep out the door, (pull out two loops near the thumb)
A long tail trails behind. (finger the tail)
But when the cat comes prowling by,
No sign of it you’ll find! (pull the tail and string vanishes!)
Finally, the little boy had an idea – he would lock the basement window the night before! And so the next morning, he tried again. Would the mouse stay?

So you and I can play! (Cradle hands together)
The little boy picked up the mouse gently and they began to play.
And that was how the little boy overcame his fear of mice and even became good friends with one.

Có một cậu bé rất sợ chuột. Cậu ấy nghĩ chúng là những sinh vật kinh khủng, xấu xí. Một ngày nọ, Cậu quyết định đối mặt với nỗi sợ hãi của mình bằng cách đi xuống tầng hầm để quan sát kỹ một con chuột và xem nó có thực sự đáng sợ như Cậu nghĩ hay không. Cậu đi xuống cầu thang, từng bước một, và xuống tầng hầm... nó đây rồi! Đó là sinh vật dễ thương nhất mà Cậu từng thấy, với hai cái tai tròn và một cái đuôi dài. Ngay khi Cậu ta định tiến lại gần, có một tiếng động phía sau Cậu ta. Thịch! Cậu quay lại và thấy con mèo nhà hàng xóm đã đẩy cửa sổ ra. Khi Cậu quay lại, con chuột đã biến mất! Thất vọng, Cậu quay trở lại tầng trên và quyết định xuống tầng hầm một lần nữa vào ngày hôm sau. Nhưng điều tương tự đã xảy ra, vì vậy Cậu ấy đã thử lại. Ngày hôm sau, ngày hôm sau cũng vậy... nhưng Cậu quyết tâm làm bạn với chuột. Cậu ấy thậm chí còn tạo ra một bài thơ về chuột.

Cuối cùng, cậu bé nảy ra một ý tưởng – cậu sẽ khóa cửa sổ tầng hầm vào đêm hôm trước! Và thế là sáng hôm sau, Cậu xuống hầm và thử lại. Liệu con chuột sẽ ở lại chơi với cậu?

Cậu bé nhẹ nhàng nhặt con chuột lên và họ bắt đầu cùng chơi.
