My school , Golightly Education Center, has a 61% rate of students living in poverty attending school. This issue has , the culture of poverty, in my opinion, has always been a factor in the urban landscape of urban education . Cultural norms can dictate the direction of education in your school in ways that make it difficult to teach students. Qualified teachers are important because teachers who come to urban school districts have very little knowledge on how to relate to their students. I have seen this in action too many times.

Excellent article !! What is the cultural climate in my classroom and how does it affect my students' engagement in reading? I 'm reading this article to see what I might need to change in the Fall 2018. The true goal of reading instruction is reading independence. Author Katie Dickerson has increased student engagement reading by allowing for students to select what they want to read, creating time daily for reading, discussing, and writing about their books. I love that she leads by example and reads with the children . We as teachers never truly understand the impact that we have on some of students and their lives. Her program helps students become better readers by expanding their vocabulary- key for reading fluency.
Dickerson, K.

As a teacher I love the Read Aloud so much that I incorporate it into all my Science and Social Studies lessons at least once a week. It's powerful on many levels because it exposes students to new content and it allows for students to hear what fluent reading sounds like. I have several students who are starved for this because no one reads to them at home. I like to article because it focused on how important that home to school connection is, or should be. This article also focuses on how important Read Aloud are in developing young eager readers. What I didn't know is that when some children are resistant to the Read Aloud, it's because they know how to read and don't want the interruptions of the class. I have two students just like this. I just made the correlation.
Ledger & Merga. (2018).

I may rethink the article to review. Assessment scores have an immediate impact on teachers and students. Scores can affect teacher placement and student retention.
The article- Making the Grade in America's Cities-Assessing Student Achievement in Urban Districts , compares and contrasts the achievement gap for students of urban, suburban, and rural school districts across the country. TUDA- Trial Urban District Assessment program measure these three factors when looking at urban schools system and why there is a 20- 25 % performance gap of 4th and 8th grade students. : socio- economics of student population( free lunch ratio is a huge factor), racial /ethnic, and ELL students. I was disheartened to see my district, Detroit Public Schools Community District, has made no strides in taking the NAEP tests for math and reading.
Blagg, K. I started with only 3 reading proficiently in Fall 2017.The rest have made significant strides throughout the year.. I will attach results when I get to work; can't get report to print or save at home. Check out this program as it relates to the article Computer Based. My computer at home and school keeps saying failed report. I am unable to upload results. I'll keep trying because I'm really proud of my babies!!!!

Another article that focuses on the case for culturally relevant material to inspire urban school children to read. I came up without this source material and I still learned how to read. I'll compare this with another article on my padlet that focuses on the same issue. The article discusses an elaborate case study geared to determine how students perceived the material - if the character and situations resemble them and their lives. This a key connection that the stud feels will make the students more responsive to reading.

Article definitely shows the connection and when I reflect on my students and their work- fluent readers are both great spellers and excellent writers.
