"They all understand that their happiness, the beauty of the city, the tenderness of their friendships, the health of their Children...depend wholly on this child's abominable misery."

I think that this is a complete turning point for the reader's thoughts. The audience is able to understand that the main reason why The Omelas is an ideal utopia is because a child has been sacrificed to face constant pain and suffering in exchange for the people's prosperity and bliss

"how is one to tell you about joy?" "do you accept the festival, the joy?" "Now do you believe in them? are they not more credible?"

I think that these questions kind of act as resting points for the reader to think about how they are understanding the reading. In the beginning the author asks the reader what they think about the word joy, after she proceeds to show the joy in the Omelas,(i think she is basically saying that the definition of joy and happiness is the Omelas, like there is no place like it.) After she had explained the utopian town of the Omelas, she basically asks the reader if they are sure of their definition of joy and if they still think it is valid. She then reveals the untold truth about the child how lives is abandoned and is living misery in order for the town to remain spontaneously happy. Although she asks the reader "are they not more credible?" the answer already given to the reader prior to the question. The Reader is able to look back and reflect how their euphoric actions is nothing but a sham.

merry, prance, sweetness, comfort, luxury, foul, rusty, feeble, vile, excrement.

Throughout the first half of the reading, the author uses a lot of "beautiful" and positive words to describe the enchantedness(?) of The Omelas, the audience is able to understand that there is no agony or discomfort in this peaceful town. During the second half of the reading she uses very negative adjectives and uncomfortable words to describe what the miserable child in the basement is facing. You can also argue that this is a compare and contrast moment because the reader is able to see the clear difference between the morbid basement and the beautiful Omelas.

"Omelas sounds in my my words like a fairytale, long ago and far away, once upon a time"

The author compares The Omelas to a fairy tale. This can also be an allusion because the audience is most likely able relate and is familiar with fairytales always ending in a happily ever after. they are able to conclude that The Omelas is a place where happy beginnings and endings exists.

I believe that the main message of this short story is that you are not living life if there is no pain. By the end of the story there are some people who realize that this "happy life" they are living is not the real life they are supposed to live. When they see the child suffering it is almost a shock to them that such horror exists. They go home in tears realizing that to live a real happy life you need to face some kind of suffering to get there.
