HANSEL AND GRETEL’S REMAKE

YOU ARE NOT READY FOR WHAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO READ.

Weall remember the end of the famous fairy tale: Hansel and Gretel. Don’t we?

You know, when the witch living in her gingerbread cottage in the forest wants to eat the poor little children, starting with Gretel who, by chance, succeeds to get out of the oven, running away from this place for going back home and finding back their parents?

Well, you are now going to discover a new version of this tale and… make sure you are not ready for what you are about to read.

So let’s go back to the moment they are running from the witch’s : Hansel and Gretel did not go back home. Forest was located closer to their school than to their home. So they ran, ran, and ran again, still quicker, still out of breath because they were thinking the witch was purchasing them all along their way. They did not turn back because they were too afraid to. They entered the first door that was at sight, they almost wrecked it because of fear that was eating them up.

They have been thinking for a few seconds that they were alone inside because one can say how late as soon as they sat, their back slumped onto the cold white wall smelling of old rotten school supplies.

But all of a sudden, they heard a silly young girl’s laughter. The light switched off by itself. The creepy atmosphere took place, and then… Silence.

A freaky silence, and that was it.

“Gretel ? Where are you ?”

No answer. Only silence, during at least ten or fifteen seconds, until a kind of freezing breeze tickled his neck. However, the room was dived into dark, so he could not see anything.

Once again, he felt this tiny breeze blowing in his ear and in meantime, someone or something kicked him on the leg.

“Wh-what is it !” he questioned out loud.

“Nobody. You are fool.”

He shivered. Who could it be ? he did not recognized the voice even though it was obvious this girl who was talking to him was his age !

“Where is my sister ?” he screamed, completely troubled.

“Not here, actually. But if you agree to play with me, I swear I give her back to you.”

He thought for a second the sentence seemed suspect, strangely said, but the context was already weird enough so he forgot everything about it.

“Well, what do you want me to do ?” he asked with the slice of courage that remained in his brave soul.

“Surprise me.” the girl spilled at him. And silence came back.

Hansel was lost. He was crying but no one could notice. He was on his own, trying to manage himself for he got an idea but nothing could happen in his mind. His brain was frozen so he was not able to think.

He walked without knowing where to go and stumbled on something. He suddenly remembered he had some matches in his pocket so he switched on one of them and saw his sister mid-eaten by someone or something he ignored everything about. But at this accurate moment, he did not care about anything else than the corpse of his dear sister…

Marie-Lys GARNIER TC

The Legend of the Enchanted attic

Once upon a time, in a somber and gloomy forest, was a dreary
castle dressed in dead leaves and black branches. The castle seemed unlived. Indeed, no ray of light could be seen as the windows were covered with dust. On a stormy night, in the darkness of the forest, strolled an old man who had difficulties to breathe.

“Please… help me I beg you” sobbed the old man kneeling on the wet
grass. With a pleading and tearful look, the elderly man lifted his torn top with his trembling hand, revealing an immense bluish plaque on his abdomen. Plus, this plaque seemed to spread slowly on the body of the old man, who, each time he breathed, clenched his teeth in order to avoid crying of profound pain. In despair and at the end of his strength, the old man knocked on the huge door of the castle before collapsing on the floor and falling asleep.

“Mommy ! Mommy !” yelled Chip Potts, the little teacup.
“What is going on honey?” asked Mrs. Potts, the tea-pot, to his son who
seemed anxious and scared.
“There is a man in front of the castle! He is hurt and seems to need help
we need to take care of him!” cried Chip, spilling the water contained in him.
“Calm down my dear.” enounced Mrs. Potts very calmly. “Big Ben please,
may you call Belle and Beast?” asked Mrs. Potts to the clock.
“Of course I will” responded Big Ben already going to Belle’s room.
Eventually, Belle, clad in her breathtaking golden dress, arrived with by her
sides the majestic, grand and imposing Beast dressed in his most elegant night blue suit. However, even though Beast was chic, he seemed exhausted and anxious because he knew that if Belle doesn’t love him within the next days, he would forever be a Beast and no longer recover his Prince appearance.

“What is going on here?” asked Beast to his servants. Mrs. Potts and the
others didn’t need to answer because the old man was lying on the floor in front of Beast.
“Why aren’t you reacting: Quick we need to take care of him!” yelled Beast
angrily. Suddenly, with his strong and hairy arms, the Beast lifted the old man heading to the stairs.
“Where are you going?” asked Belle following him.
“The attic, the only hot and warm area in this cold and somber castle.” whispered Beast in his beard.

Watching Belle and Beast heading to the attic, Lumière, Mrs. Potts and the
others hoped that this situation would bring them closer and help Belle fall in love with the Beast.

Eventually, Belle and Beast arrived to the attic. Beast laid the elderly-man
onto the bed searching for a solution to heal him. Unfortunately, not having any first aid kit for humans, he didn’t know what to do. Terrified to see that he wasn’t able to save this man, whose condition was getting worse the more time passed, Beast sat on the floor thinking. He thought for hours and hours as the night was passing by but in vain. No solution found.

“Beast , the man is waking up” said Belle, putting her soft hand on
the strong shoulder of Beast.
Therefore, Beast lifted his head up to see the old man crying in pain.
“It is going to be okay Sir, we are taking care of you now.” enounced Beast
calmly. However, the man wasn’t reassured when he saw the scary and imposing figure of the Beast. He tried moving and escaping the attic of the castle in which he was but couldn’t manage to move because of his profound pain on his abdomen.
“Sir calm down. Shhh…” said Beast. Surprisingly, the imposing creature
started singing in order for the man to fall asleep. His voice compared to his appearance was soft, pure and innocent. Belle stood in awe and watched Beast, eyes closed, singing to the sickened man.

“Tale as old as times.. Song as old as rhyme.. Beauty and the Beast” sung
softly the creature. Suddenly, a blue light appeared in the room spinning around the creature. Slowly, the Beast’s feet, legs, arms, head were transforming into a normal human and even better: a Prince.
The Beast continued singing and the old man started to feel on his abdomen a soft liquid spreading, healing him. The elderly man admired the Beast, transformed into an elegant and handsome man. The Prince stopped singing and opened his eyes to discover the old man standing on his two feet and dancing with Belle in the rhythm of the song he was singing.
Surprised and touched, the Prince felt for the first time in his life happy.
“Thank you sir. If you hadn’t been here I would have died in this forest my friend.”

The Prince understood that the voice was the reflection of the soul and that inner beauty was more important than physical beauty. This was the secret of the Beast. It then became the legend of the enchanted attic.

THE END

by : Elody Bailet
