The gold rush was in California it started on January, 24th, 1848. People from all over the world were traveling to California. Men, Woman, poor people, black people, foreigners, Native Americans, & families. During this time California was one of the freest states in the U.S. the government was more equal and fair woman could participate in government, and so could men who weren’t jus wealthy. Anyone could get a job no matter what race or sex. Woman didn’t just have to stay at home and cook or clean they could be more independent and all people had the same rights. Blacks, Natives, & foreigners weren’t slaves and people could also freely own their own shops. Also during this time was the California Gold Rush which is why most people even traveled to California and relocated there. The first person on record to find gold was James W. Marshall. He found it at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma, California. Many people wanted gold because they’d become rich but it was very hard to find people you had to dig underground for it and because the more people who came to look the harder it was to find. Eventually the gold rush did come to an end in 1855 and overall there were 300,000 people who came from their other places to California.

Why People Headed West

People began heading west in the 1850's. So you may be wondering why? And what lead people to want to head west, so let me tell you. People began to head west because in the west it was extremely free compared to the rest of the U.S. women and men had equal rights and all males had equal rights too. In most places women couldn't do anything they just had to stay home, cook, clean, and take care of children. They also couldn't go to school. Then, low income men weren't treated as fairly as rich men and they had to be rich white men. The rich white men, were the ones with basically any freedom. And then any colored person wasn't allowed to do anything really. They couldn't open their own shops, so they had to work for other people, they couldn't go to school, male or female, they couldn't vote and basically had no wrights, and during this time a lot of slavery was going on. So when people heard about the west it sounded like a dream come true because, there's no slavery, any person no matter race or sex can own their own shop, men and women could both vote, women could be apart of government, it wasn't just white men that could be in government and vote, so could low income men and women. People could have their own beliefs and traditions and wouldn't get in trouble because of it. And colored people weren't enslaved. So basically the west was the best thing to ever come and that's why people were so eager to move west. I mean I would want to as well!

So back in April 1848, Basically the Mexican American war, was a fight between the united states and Mexico. They were in a fight for land because texas is a lot of land but half of it ended in mexican territory and the other half ended in united states territory and both countries were trying to claim all that land which caused a dispute and that's why they fought over it.

The Oregon trail was 2,179 miles long heading from east to west it connected from the Missouri River to Oregon’s trials. It was mainly settlers, miners, farmers, ranchers, families, and businesses owners, that took the Oregon trail. People decided to take the Oregon trail because there was free land and possibility of gold in California. Also farmers needed better soil so that was another attraction. And the westward expansion of the United States is called “Manifest Destiny”.

The Age Of Reform

The age of reform was a movement in the United States in the nineteenth century. It was a social reform and in this move to was a lot of changes. Women started a suffer age movement so that they could have equal and better rights as many men. Prisoners got better treatment in jail so that they wouldn’t automatically be executed. Slavery was abolished which was good because it gave newly free people a chance to live their own life and be happy and free. Lastly it also seems like child abuse in schools and just in general became illegal because children shouldn’t she hit or whipped for bad behavior and that could end up to worse things physically done to a child than just using that to acknowledge bad behavior. So basically the Age of Reform was a very good period of time for the United States to better itself and its laws.
