My Name is Yoon

Yoon is a young immigrant from Korea who struggled with loneliness and change in her new country. Disliking her name in English, she referred to herself with the new vocabulary words she learned like “cat,” “bird,” and “cupcake.” This covert resistance to change was met with understanding from her teacher. In the end, her parents and the teacher’s patient understanding eased Yoon’s reservation. Even in English, she was still “Shining Wisdom” as her name implied.
I recommend this book because it portrayed the Korean family well. The author showed the quiet authority of the father, and the encouraging care of the mother. I enjoyed My Name is Yoon because the message was simple and poignant. Its sensitivity and simplicity in exploring immigrant feelings of loneliness and fear
helped me understand the Korean culture.

To Sangoel, a refugee from the Sudan, his name was the one thing that was precious and could not be stripped away. In many cultures, names provide continuity and belongingness. Having people struggle and mispronounce his name caused Sangoel deep consternation. His name was a link to his past and identity. He finally found a creative way to have his classmates learn his name.
I recommend this book because it taught me how hard it must be to move to a different culture where people cannot even pronounce your name correctly

Here I am is an unusual book. It contains no words. The story is told through beautiful illustrations depicting a young Korean boy who immigrates to the United States. He also brings with him a seed. He at first struggles with loneliness and isolation. But eventually, with the help of his seed finds a friend and begins his journey of making his new country, home. The book contains a synopsis of the story at the end. It is fun and unusual. I enjoyed figuring out the story through the illustrations.
I recommend this book because it helped me understand how lonely immigrants can feel, and how I can make a difference by becoming a friend to an immigrant

The lotus Seed represent the need of immigrants to carry along from their past, a symbol of connectedness.
To others, the part might seem insignificant like a seed but can mean the whole world to the possessor.
I recommend this book because it helped me understand the sadness and the loss that immigrants feel. They leave their whole world behind and have to adjust to a new country with different values and standards.

Duck for Turkey Day

Duck for Turkey Day deals with immigrant-parent child conflict. It is not uncommon for immigrant students to feel ashamed of how their parents do things. Celebrating diversity in the classrooms communicates to everyone the message that in America it is desirable to integrate our home culture with our new culture.
I recommend this book because it is funny. It shows how sometimes we are too self-conscious; we want to hide. Yet, there are people all around us that are different. It is okay to stand out sometimes.

The Big Red Lollipop is humorous and entertaining. It is often hard for young immigrants to impress on their parents the importance of the new “rules” they are learning in America. Parents do not seem to understand and are reluctant to change.
I recommend this book because it is funny and shows how parents and children in every culture suffer from misunderstandings and frustration.

In Silent Music: A Story of Baghdad a young Iraqi, Ali, distances himself from the horror of war by practicing the ancient art of Arabic calligraphy. His art connects him to his favorite hero, Yakut, the most famous Arab calligrapher who also lived in Baghdad around 1298 AD when it fell to the Mongols.
I recommend Silent Music because it helped me to realize that the young victims of a war that arrive at our classrooms have more than horror inside. They have a certain beauty and sensitivity if developed can be a redeeming quality of all the suffering and the misery of war.
