Overview

The previous curriculum coordinator, Mrs. Jay, has now become the principal at her elementary school and she wants her faculty to teach according to the Common Core State Standards. She began with conducting a survey where she found that most of her teachers did not have a firm grasp on what CCSS consisted of. Mrs. Jay began her own research focusing on the CCSS for ELA and found herself overwhelmed with information. She decided that her goal was to set up a 90 minute professional development meeting that simplified this information and gave the teachers access to what they needed to implement the standards into their own classroom units. She used the app LiveBinder to help organize her research findings and then created a PowerPoint that would lead her through her presentation. She wanted to continue using 21st century skills and know Prezi was more interesting for teachers so she found a way to translate her PowerPoint into a Prezi presentation. For her presentation, she had 20 computers for teachers themselves to interact with LiveBinder and get an idea about how it works and what it looks like. The staff thoroughly enjoyed her presentation and continued asking questions in interest to use their own LiveBinder and incorporate it into their work processes to include the standards into their own classrooms.

Strategy - Technology

The first strategy Mrs. Jay used in her professional development was incorporating technology into her research organization and presentation. Instead of sticking with the norm and using a PowerPoint to lecture the information she wanted them to know, she made the presentation more engaging by transforming it into a Prezi, and then used other computers for teachers to interact along with her during her speech and try out LiveBinder. Not only was she testing her own ability of using new technology skills, but she was showing the other staff that there are ways to incorporate technology into anything, including a 90 minute meeting over CCSS.

Additional Strategy - Collaboration

The second strategy that Mrs. Jay used to help her professional development meeting be successful was collaboration. First, she collaborated with the superintendent, and the middle school principal to discuss what their staff already knew about CCSS. Next, Mrs. Jay reached out to a friend, who was also a curriculum design specialist, to discuss her presentation. Together they used videoconference to communicate and discuss other possible ideas Mrs. Jay could use in her presentation and for her to check out another teachers work, which gave her the idea to use LiveBinder. Later, Mrs. Jay went back to the superintendent and middle school principal to review the presentation and receive feedback on it. Mrs. Jay could not have done this by herself and it was very important that she included all of these outside resources to help her professional development presentation be the best it could be. Mrs. Jay even used 21st century collaborative environments by videoconferencing with other colleagues and checking out various online tools to gather all the information she needed.
