Dhivyaa Ramesh (1171301658)
*Interracial relationship*, was once banned officially and cultural, is outdated and not considered in-line with today’s social interaction and realities. It is baseless to forbid and persecute any two people to get married just on the base of race. It’s just dividing and divisive. The ways to overcome this issue is to have a good conversation with family or friends by pointing out that mixed-race kids who are raised in loving homes and allowed to embrace all sides of their heritage don’t fare any worse than other children.

Not being able to use computers/books in exams

Ahmad Ariff Bin Ahmad Khusairy (1121117456)
Lets be honest. Have you been told to memorize a mathematical formula, texts, etc. when you were younger. The reasoning was always "its not like you can refer to your notes when you are working" or "its not like you will have a calculator/computer in your pocket all the time". The problem is, that statement is a fallacy. The fact that smart phones allows us to access the world's information with just a click of a button proves it. Why limit our self during an examination by not using technology that is meant to increase the quality of life. The hypocrisy worsens as some students cheats during exams and scored better because of it. This problem could be easily overcome by allowing all students to bring their own reference thus leveling the playing field.

Force to attend tuition classes to get good grades in exams

Ng Wan Zhing (1161101506)
Most of the Chinese parents force their child to attend tuition class of almost every subject since primary school. The child doesn't have any leisure time, his everyday life is just study and tuition. The parents think that their child will definitely get good grades since they already spent their money on tuition. Most parents have the stereotype thinking that tuition classes are better than government school. When the child didn't meet their expectation, the child will be scolded. I think that getting poor grades doesn't mean you are bad at study. Grades doesn't justify a person.

Rule: Force to be bald for all boys and girls are prohibited for keeping long hair.

Goh Chee Leng (1181302472)
Its actually one of the rule in my secondary school in which all boys are force to be bald.
Reason for the rules? The school scared that the boys will playing their hair and keep on going to toilet to comb and check at their hairstyle making them not in the study mood. The school believe that the hair would cause the boys to show off in front of the girls and causing more trouble to the school management so, this rule has been created.
Its actually a quite common rule in most of the SMJK in Penang. At least 3/4 of the SMJK in Penang have this rule and yup, we were all forced to be bald for 5 years!!!
This is ridiculous right? Hair is a protection for head from being sunburn or something but we were force to cut it until its shorter than 2 cm.
There was a story about why this rule is so trending in Penang but I am lazy to type :P .
Back to the topic, hair, one of the protection to protect our head and even our brain from overheat shouldn't be just cut like that.
Even girls can't keep their hair long and only certain hairstyle are allow for them. They are only allow to choose to cut hairstyle which the school allow.( Nah, this one is normal.)
I think probably the chinese secondary school in Penang should ban this rule since it is a modern era right now. No point lah doing this.

For me, the rule that it is harder to get a job or any opportunity in life after 30 years old is quite irrelevant in today's world. This is because, while there are some companies that are in need for younger people because these people have more energy than older ones, there are always opportunities that many people can utilize in their life, regardless of their age. There are companies that require candidates that have more experiences and knowledge, rather than just looking only at their age. It is up to them to get up and explore such chances, travelling to a new uncharted field to gain experiences and insights, as well as ready to take risk on unpredictable moments in life.

In my opinion, women have been suppressed and pushed aside for a very long time. For an example, in Switzerland women weren't allowed to vote until 1971 and it took 13 more years to hold a ministerial office. Despite being one of the most developed and progressive countries, it took years to gain power for all women in Switzerland. 2018 has finally been declared as 'The Year Of Woman" due to the increase number of women in ministerial offices and running the House Of Parliament. It took more 100 years to get women's rights and that says a lot about outdated customs.

Thus, in this 21st century women are finally able to vote and numbers has been improving over the years allowing young generations live in an open minded community . To be given the mandate to revise this issue, I would say that men should not feel nor be threatened by women as at the end of the day both genders equally want the same power which is to be heard.

What seems to be an outdated and unwritten rules/culture for me is 'what happen in place x stays in place x". Being silent or doing nothing when someone we know is being bullied or oppressed, be it from primary school all the way to work place. To add insult to injury, some of us even support the bullies/oppressor in return for safety/money. This culture let bullying thrive and make bullies feel as if they were powerful as no one will report their wrongdoings to the authority until the bullied sustained heavy injury or even worst, death. Sometimes, even the authority will try to cover any cases of bullying on the pretext of "protecting the institution image" or "preventing further trouble".
What can be done and is slowly being done is to educate and empower society to get evidence and report to the authorities and if they are negligent, to the police or even court. The bully can even be sued for bullying if enough evidence is collected. Any action taken against the bully will prevent any future bullying case to ever happen.

For me, the most common and outdated rule that usually parents ask us to do is after high school, we must go study abroad. They forced us to go abroad because they think that oversea's education is better than locals and eventually when we wanted to apply for work, it will make it easier for us to get a job. My sister's friend just graduated from the UK, and now she does not even have a job and what is she doing right now? yes, online business. In my point of view, we are living in the 21st century, so most of the people now are on their gadgets and doing online business and less people are working in the office nowdays. It does not matter where did u study whether abroad or local, everything is the same, you will still get a certificate and all. But, the most important thing in life is that we must have the skills and can communicate well with other people.

Some parents in Malaysia would like to send their children to sbp or mrsm as they feel it is better for their children to go there instead of being in a normal school. Some of them, they also have a perception where they think those who study at the normal school are not very smart compared to those who study in sbp or mrsm. For me, it is not about the school itself but how the persons could deal with their life and how they could manage their time properly. It is all depends on the children. For instance, there is a school at Penang which is known with its problematic students. There are a lot of cases about the students in that school. However, there was a student ( a girl) was able to get straight A's during SPM. All teachers e very happy as previously, none of their students got staright A's in their school. Thus, we cannot label someone just like that. Even though they are from normal school, there are still some of the students are intelligent or even more intelligent than sbp or mrsm students. If I have parents like that, I would explain to them that everyone are able to be a successful person in the future regardless of where they pursue their studies.

One of the culture that i feel outdated is to have a kenduri arwah or majlis tahlil when your family member died. There are a lot of debates on this issue. First of all, if the family is financially and mentally stable to throw a majlis tahlil during the night after funeral and the night after for 7 nights straight, then it is fine for them. BUT. If the family of the dead person were not capable for it, don't look at them like they just commit a crime. Majlis tahlil has good intention in it as we recite the tahlil as sadaqah to the person who died but other than that, it is just a burden. You don't need to invite other people just to recite the tahlil. You, yourself can recite it. And please don't go on like this issue as bidaah issue, that is a new whole story. Thanks

Chinese people believes that sharing a pear will bring negativity, pessimism and bad omen for friendship and family. Sharing a pear in Mandarin sounds the same as the Mandarin word with the meaning "to separate". In other words, sharing a pear leads to friendship splitting and even divorce. We should be more open minded that sharing pears are just sharing fruits as sharing is caring. Sharing is a generous act and value that we should practise.

One such custom that is conventionally practiced in the Indian community is that of forcing or coaxing their children to choose between one of the few commonly picked career path in the Indian community. This includes doctor, engineer, lawyer or IT amongst others. These career paths have been the go to for the Indian community for decades and it is no surprise to see young Indian lads studying for one of these in the varsities not out of self interest but merely due to pressure from their family. This, I believe is a very outdated practice that does not suit the modern way of life where more and more career types are being created that are equal or even better in terms of returns and significance in the society.

It was quite common among us to not have a two way interaction in class as only the teachers or the lecturers who are speaking. This is because students were being shy and did not want to attract him/herself to attention when they ask the question out loud. I think that the norm or custom is outdated because it is 2019, how do we keep moving forward if we are too afraid or shy with everything? We need to ensure that younger generations are polished with bravery to speak but not in a rude manner and we ourselves have to change from within.

Culture of playing video games as a job. Asian parents believe that their children playing video games is always a waste of time and will never amount to anything in the future. However, there are many young people who become successful through playing video games competitively (Esports) or recording themselves playing online (Streaming). Even so, gaming and anything related to gaming will always have a negative perception on people in my (Chinese) community, because it’s not a lawyer or doctor.

My dad usually eats first but my mom and I are the regulators of the culture. I carry on the culture everywhere I go, even among my peer. For me, it's a sign of consideration to other people and it helps me become more discipline in restraining hunger or other lustful intent.

Pregnant women tend to have a lot of rules that they must follow in order to prevent any unexpected accident, miscarriage especially. For example, there are some fruits, vegetables or even seafoods that are prohibited for them to consume. The most common fruit that our older generations would consider it as a taboo during pregnancy is a pineapple. They said, it contains a strong and sting flavour which can cause harm to the baby, as well as cause of abortion. On the other hand, based on scientific evidence, one cause of abortion is high consumption of bromelain and vitamin C. Pineapple contains both of these, but at very little amount. However, older generations may come out with this taboo if they have experienced it or some of community has ever faced the same thing. Nevertheless, pineapple is not a strong reason that cause abortion and pregnant women can actually eat it at light amount but, if they feel cautious and want to prevent from something bad happen, it's okay to practice it during their pregnancy. To sums up, I think we must educate people on how certain rules that occurred have its specific reasons or may have not. We must learn and make some readings first before we believe or just follow it. Older generations usually learn through experience rather than books and evidences, thus we can't simply obey the taboo and pass it down to the next generations if it's not necessarily true.

According to outdated customs, parents forbid their girls to sing during cooking because they are fond of getting married with old person. The reason why old people say so is because the food that girls cook might burn up if they neglect to sing. Besides, their saliva may be in the food and it is not sweet in the eyes of people when girls singing in the kitchen
