For me fear, like most things, is extremely personal, and it will go as far as to affect everything I do. For example I have a slight fear of bugs, especially bees, so I dont go outside very often. I also have a blaring fear of pain (and anything that can cause pain) which also feeds into my fear of a painful death. Now, in I am Legend Robert has a fear of dying prematurely, he didn’t want to die when he knew he could do something to bring back society.

For me, loneliness is a very debatable topic, on one hand it puts me into a very gloomy mood, but on the other hand it doesn’t really bother me. Most times when loneliness becomes a reason for me to feel bad, I was already in that type of mood, and things like that only seem to escalate that feeling. Then on the other side of the spectrum I don’t see being lonely as a bad thing, but instead a god send, because I prefer to get lost in my head most times. In the book, Robert deals with the feeling of being lonely and this feeling is often accompanied by depression, which truly shows how badly this affects Robert throughout. However once his main source of motivation comes around being lonely didn’t seem to affect him as much, although he was still alone.

For a family fear is commonly something we’d share as a common enemy, since we all love each other and choose to make our safety a top priority. For most families when dealing with fear as a group, their last intention would be to split up. As seen in I am legend the movie, Robert did everything in his power to protect his family, and chose to send his daughter and wife away to ensure their safety. In the book, we focus more on the loss of family, and those you care about.

When alone in a family, it may be due to a lack of communication or maybe the loss of a family member. To feel alone while surrounded by those who care about you is a whole other thing. A great example of this is the movie Cyberbully, which focuses on a girl who gets tormented by people online and attempts to take her own life, but is saved by her mom and best friend whilst trying to overdose.

A perfect example of this is seen in the movie X-men Days of future past, where a scientist created these machines that could track and kill all the mutants. Of course the exact reason for the creation of these robots was because the people feared the mutants would become a threat to mankind, just because they didn’t understand what they were. So in situations where our existence is threatened, we’d do anything to ensure our survival, including the abandonment of our morals.

To be alone for a long time, with no one around to keep you and keep your morals in line becomes challenging. You’ll find when there’s nobody there your morals seem to drift away because nobody would be watching you. In a sense every human needs someone to keep them in line, or vise versa. Humans work with each other like yin and yang essentially. For instance look at all the past wars, when there was tyranny there was someone else who intervened and put an end to it, we all put each other in our places. So back to my initial thought, we would loose all sense of our humanity if we didn’t have someone there to keep us in line.
