Digital storytelling is a way for students to tell personal narratives, summarize stories they've heard and explain and describe content they've learned.
It is done using a variety of media tools. Students can use graphics, photos, voice recordings, sound clips, videos and music in whatever way they want to express their message and their understanding.

WHY should we use it with our students?

In contrast to traditional pen and paper, students have more freedom and flexibility to express themselves through digital storytelling.
It gives them more choice in how they will communicate. The variety of choices allows them the opportunity to CREATIVELY show their thinking in a way that is more meaningful to the individual student.
I think it can benefit more students in the classroom, because, not only does it appeal to this digital-age generation, but it makes learning accessible to different learning styles.
Lastly, the fact that the work is digital allows for students and teachers to connect and share the work immediately. Students have more opportunity to comment and collaborate on work and other projects. It is another way to encourage and foster cooperative learning in a way that is effective and meaningful.

I teach 4th grade Dual Language. My students have to complete a personal narrative during the first quarter of the year. After two months of summer vacation, many students start the year 'rusty' when it comes to writing. Padlet can be a helpful way for them to tell about an event in their lives without the pressure of having to write everything out. My language learners can use images for words or phrases they don't know or record their voice (if they are more comfortable verbally).

I also think this resource can be used effectively an end of unit assement. Again, students of all levels and abilties can have more flexibility in expressing their understanding using whatever media tools are available to them without the stress of writing out lengthy descriptions and explanations. And rather than me asking the specific questions, students are free to tell and describe any knowledge that they've gained in a more open-ended way.

I think digital storytelling provides a wonderful opportunity for collaboration. The idea that students have access to a wide range of tools can allow for students to work on an assignment or project together and contribute in a way that feels comfortable to them and highlights their strengths and talents. For example, someone might be more comfortable typing text, while another might want to provde the graphics. I can also see teamwork, communcation, and enthusiasm for learning being fostered by the flexibility and creativity that is allowed with this kind of work.
