European countries hoped to obtain goods from the people of Asia and Christianize them. They also hoped to convert non-Christians throughout the world.

It was nearly impossible for a captain to cross 3000 miles and return again. Shipbuilders designed a new vessels called the caravel. Europeans also improved their navigation techniques to better their location at sea.

Portugal took the lead in exploration due to strong government support. Price Henry helped conquer Muslim city of Ceuta in North Africa. In Ceuta, Portuguese invaders found all kinds of spices and large supplies of gold, silver, and jewels.

Portugal began to build a trading empire throughout the Indian Ocean.  Portugal then took control of the spice trade from Muslim merchants. They defeated a Muslim fleet and build a fort at Hormuz. Portugal captured Goa and used the capital as their trading empire.
