• Iago continues his manipulative tactics, further twisting events and conversations to make Othello believe in Desdemona's infidelity. 

• Iago's lies become more elaborate, convincing Othello to believe in a fabricated affair between Desdemona and Cassio. 

• Iago orchestrates the plot to have Cassio killed, showcasing his growing ruthlessness and desire to see his plans come to life. 

Desdemona:

• Despite Othello's increasingly abusive behavior, Desdemona remains faithful.

• She is bewildered by Othello's sudden change in attitude. 

• Desdemona turns to Emilia for support and understanding, highlighting her vulnerability and isolation.

1. Iago sets up Cassio’s murder

• Iago convinces Roderigo to ambush and kill Cassio, promising that Cassio’s death will help Roderigo win Desdemona.

• Iago secretly plans to kill Roderigo, too, to cover his tracks.

2. Cassio wounds Roderigo

• Roderigo attacks Cassio, but fails.

• Cassio fights back and injures Roderigo.

• Then, Iago jumps in from the shadows and stabs Cassio in the leg, pretending to come to his rescue.

3. Iago pretends to be a hero

• Othello briefly appears, sees Cassio wounded, and believes Iago has carried out the murder.

• Othello, thinking revenge is complete, goes off to kill Desdemona.

4. Gratiano and Lodovico arrive

• They hear the noise and come to help.

• Iago returns, pretending he doesn’t know what happened, and then kills Roderigo to silence him permanently.

5. Cassio survives

• Cassio is carried away, still alive but badly wounded.

• Iago keeps up the act of being the honest, loyal friend.

Betrayal/ deception-> Iago who ultimately betrayed Othello and deceived him into thinking Desdemona was unfaithful

Revenge/ Justice-> Iago getting arrested and Othello killing hymself

Irony-> Othello killing Desdemona even though she never did anything wrong

This scene contains themes of Loyalty and Manipulation. Iago manipulates Cassio by not telling him whom Othello is, as well as by pretending to take Othello’s side against Brabantio, even though he revealed Othello’s secret marriage.

Race and Culture, specifically racial prejudice, is represented through Othello’s marriage causing a huge scene just because he is a person of colour.

Manhood and Honour is shown through Brabantio’s fight for his family’s honour and through Othello’s confidence when defending himself against Brabantio.

Before that can proceed, Brabantio arrives and accuses Othello of using witchcraft to win Desdemona’s love. Othello calmly defends himself, explaining that Desdemona fell in love with him after hearing the stories of his adventurous life. Desdemona confirms this and asserts her loyalty to Othello.

The Duke sides with Othello, and Brabantio reluctantly accepts the marriage but warns Othello that Desdemona may deceive him one day, just as she did her father.

Desdemona asks to accompany Othello to Cyprus, and the Duke allows it. Othello entrusts her to Iago’s care until they reunite.

At the end of the scene, Iago begins to reveal his plan to manipulate Othello by making him believe Desdemona is unfaithful with Cassio.

- Iago calls himself "honest Iago" while plotting everyone's downfall

- pretends to be Cassio's friend-> gives him advice on asking Desdemona for help, but secretly plans to use this against both of them

- He appears to help Othello, and by his side, while planning his downfall

Reputation:

- After the fight, Cassio cries "Reputation, reputation, reputation! O, I have lost my reputation!" -> He's more upset about losing his reputation than about losing his job

- Iago uses his need for good reputation against him

Being an outsider:

- Other characters refer to Othello as "the Moor" rather than by name

- Iago wants to exploit Othello's insecurity about being different when he suggests Desdemona would prefer someone more like herself

Women:

- Iago makes crude jokes about women and marriage to Desdemona and Emilia

- He says that all women are lazy and unfaithful

Broken trust:

- Iago gets Cassio drunk and starts a fight, betraying Cassio's trust

- He pretends to reluctantly tell Othello about the fight while wanting to damage Cassio

- He begins manipulating Othello while appearing to be his loyal friend

1. Othello murders Desdemona

• Othello enters their bedroom while Desdemona is asleep.

• He gives a dramatic soliloquy, comparing her to a candle—something he can put out, but never reignite once extinguished.

• Desdemona wakes up and pleads for her life, but Othello is convinced she was unfaithful with Cassio.

• He strangles her despite her protests of innocence.

2. Emilia exposes Iago

• Emilia enters and discovers Desdemona dying.

• With her last breath, Desdemona claims she killed herself—a moment that shows her loyalty to Othello, even in death.

• Emilia quickly realizes what has happened and confronts Othello.

• When she learns Othello’s belief was based on the handkerchief and Iago’s lies, she exposes Iago’s scheme.

• Iago kills Emilia to silence her.

3. Truth revealed, Othello breaks down

• Lodovico and Gratiano enter with news that Cassio is alive and that Iago’s plot has been uncovered.

• Othello realizes his mistake and is overcome with guilt and despair.

4. Othello kills himself

• After a final speech reflecting on his downfall and asking to be remembered both justly and honestly, he stabs himself and dies beside Desdemona.

5. Ending

• Iago is arrested, and Lodovico takes charge, declaring he will return to Venice with news of what has happened.

• Cassio is left in charge of Cyprus.

• A storm destroys the Turkish fleet -> the threat to Cyprus is over.

• Cassio's ship arrives first, carrying Desdemona, Iago, Emilia, and Roderigo. Othello's fate remains unknown.

• A third ship is sighted, and it turns out to be Othello, who arrives safely to the relief of all, especially Desdemona.

• While waiting, Iago makes sexist comments, criticizing women

• Iago observes Cassio’s polite behavior towards Desdemona and plans to exploit it.

• Othello and Desdemona reunite and express their love.

• Iago convinces Roderigo that Cassio and Desdemona are lovers and manipulates him into picking a fight with Cassio later that night.

• Iago shares his plan with the audience: to make Othello jealous by framing Cassio and Desdemona.

Cassio wants help from Desdemona, to get on Othellos good side again, after being dismissed. He asked Emilia for help to talk too Desdemona and she agrees.

Scene2:

Othello gives Iago some letters to deliver and talks about Military stuff.

Scene3:

Cassio talks to Desdemona to help him plead his case. Desdemona then talks to Othello and keeps bringing up Cassio during the discusion. Othello becomes suspicious. Iago then talks to Othello afterwards and suggests that Desdemona might be cheating. Othello becomes paraniod, but he still trusts his wife.

Iago then plans to stell the hankerchief to plant it into Cassios room.

Scene4:

Desdemona is looking for the hankerchief and Othello becomes suspicious. Cassio finds the hankerchief and gives it to his mistress Bianca.
