jealousy

Iago continues to manipulate Othello, arranging a conversation with Cassio that Othello misinterprets as evidence of Desdemona’s betrayal. This misunderstanding causes Othello to spiral deeper into jealousy, eventually striking Desdemona.

Manipulation

Iago’s manipulation reaches its peak in Act 4. He engineers situations, distorts meaning, and uses Othello’s insecurities to control his thoughts and actions.

Key Example: Iago sets up a conversation with Cassio and tricks Othello into thinking Cassio is laughing about Desdemona. Othello watches and listens, but completely misinterprets the situation — exactly as Iago planned.

Trust/betrayal

Trust is twisted in Act 4 — Othello completely trusts Iago, the real betrayer, and no longer trusts Desdemona, who is innocent.

Key Example: Othello says of Desdemona: “This is a subtle whore.” He no longer trusts her word and believes she’s betrayed him. Meanwhile, Iago keeps up the mask of loyalty.

Gender and power through that

Act 4 emphasizes how women are powerless in the face of male authority. Desdemona and Emilia both suffer because of assumptions made by men.

Key Example: Othello slaps Desdemona in public and accuses her of infidelity. Desdemona is shocked but still submissive, asking, “I have not deserved this.”

Foreshadowing of tragedy

The tone and action of Act 4 strongly suggest that tragedy is unavoidable. Othello is already talking about killing Desdemona, and there is a growing sense that the characters are beyond saving.

Key Example: Othello says, “Get me some poison... this night.” Iago instead urges him to strangle her — further pushing him toward violent resolution.
