Her father and the other men were standing around in ice-cream coats and bow ties and the women were in sandals picking up herring snacks on toothpicks off a big plate and they were all holding drinks the color of water with olives and sprigs of mint in them. When my parents have somebody over they get lemonade and if it's a real racy affair Schlitz in tall glasses with "They'll Do It Every Time" cartoons stenciled on.” This shows that Sammy believes that certain things can help you maybe see into their life more. This scene also shows a little bit about the character Sammy, that he is not wealthy. Although, we do not know what had truly happened within her life, but the text within the story suggest that their was some of suspense happening sooner or later. But what you want-" "I want arsenic" She declined the favor of telling the man what she needed it for. When the story begins the house is clean and pure with white walls. "It was a big, squarish frame house that had once been white, decorated with cupolas and spires and scrolled balconies in the heavily lightsome style of the seventies, set on what had once been our most select street." Emily was also pure in her younger years. Her father protected her purity by turning away any men he didn't believe were worthy, which was all of them. As the story goes on, the house becomes dirty and smelly. The narrator describes it as "an eyesore among eyesores." At the same time, Emily becomes old and more deranged. She becomes insane, not only killing her fiance but also sleeping with his corpse.

Symbolism can also be based on Sammy’s and Lengel's reaction to the girl’s image. The theme relating to the element shows the girls what they wanted. They got their own publicity and got people’s attention with something that the opposite sex would respond to. “ His face was dark gray and his back stiff, as if he’d just had an injection of iron, and my stomach kind of fell as I felt how hard the world was going to be to me hereafter”. The aftermath of how Lengel handled the situation more than Sammy, symbolizes that Lengel has had more experience of seeing people like the girls in A&P.

Imagery is represented in the story A&P when Sammy describes the girls when he sees them. The first girl he describes is “chunky” “pretty pale.” The next girl was “tall with black hair that hasn't quite frizzed right” The last girl he described Queen who has “oaky hair” “prim face.” The details the author gave shows the readers a picture of what the girls looked like.
