• One of the activities in the day trip last year is nature journaling

• With what is shared today (demo, words, numbers, pictures, colouring), there is a better structure for students to complete the activity.

• Try out the nature journaling structure during the day trip this year

Challenge

• May have to do a more thorough recee of the area before the day trip

• Need to prep logistics (big flipboard for the demo, possibly magnifying glasses etc)

Extend - Gallery walk towards the end will get some students to see different perspectives even if they have observed the same object.

Challenge - I wonder how to engage students who do not like nature. They seemed to be interested in the activity. I wonder if with proper tunning in the studwnt may be more curious or willing to try.

• This session helped me reconnect with my own experiences of being in nature, whether during school camps or garden walk with students. It reminded me of the importance of slowing down and observing the small details around us, something we often overlook in our fast-paced teaching routines.

• Nature journaling connects well with our PE curriculum’s emphasis on Outdoor Education, particularly in building students’ sense of place and care for the natural environment.

Extend

• This experience expanded my understanding of how journaling can go beyond written reflection. Using numbers, words, and drawings as observation tools makes it accessible to different learning styles, especially for our younger students.

• It gave me ideas on how I could incorporate short journaling moments during outdoor walks in PE, or as part of a tuning-in activity.

Challenge

• One challenge I foresee is helping students focus during journaling in an outdoor setting where they might be easily distracted. I’ll need to think about how to scaffold the activity appropriately.

• Thinking routines can also be introduced to deepen the learning experience. Such as "see-think-wonder". There is a need to integrate this kind of reflective thinking into PE lessons .

• Students will require scaffolding in the journaling process for as they may struggle with drawing or descriptive writing.

• As a PE teacher, I need to consider how to balance physical activity with stillness and observation, especially for students who may be more kinesthetic or energetic.

• Nature journalling is a good activity to get students to slow down and to use all their senses and also prior knowledge (i.e. levels, texture, etc) to reflect what they observe

• It is helpful to scaffold and demo how to draw prior to the start of their nature journalling (i.e. use of basic shapes, colours and how to observe and add details)

Challenge

• I wonder how we can minimise the logistics required to make students feel comfortable, while still making the activities effective

• I also wonder how to engage students who have higher energy levels. Are there ways we can gamify the activity to provide greater motivation for students who may not be as interested?

Extend - Using simple instructions (using simple shapes, lines and numbers) to achieve their task objective (and achieve many varied outcomes). Will be great if the class has the opportunity to share with everyone (promoting 21CC and values at the same time)

Challenge - Though this activity can promote independence and greater autonomy, some students may need a buddy to keep a watchful eye. Also, the logistics involved may require a lot of preparation.

It reminds me of the fur on some of the dogs and cats that my neighbours have. They are so furry and often drop their fur!
