Many people don't understand why or how other people become addicted to drugs. They may mistakenly think that those who use drugs lack moral principles or willpower and that they could stop their drug use simply by choosing to. In reality, drug addiction is a complex disease, and quitting usually takes more than good intentions or a strong will. Drugs change the brain in ways that make quitting hard, even for those who want to. Fortunately, researchers know more than ever about how drugs affect the brain and have found treatments that can help people recover from drug addiction and lead productive lives.
https://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/drugfacts/understanding-drug-use-addiction

Micheal Botticelli talks about his experience with drugs. He started to do drugs at a young age. He talks about why he did do drugs. He grew up in a family riddled with drugs. He started to do drugs because growing up he was figuring out his sexuality. He said growing up as a gay kid is hard but the drugs took all of the pain away. He also went to gay clubs and also drank. He thought that drinking would take all his pain away but it really didn't help at all it just made things worse for him.
