In this video it shows the real struggle children with selective mutism have in real life situations. As it shows in the video the child wants to play with the other boys but because of his anxiety disorder his brain doesn't allow him to. Selective mutism doesn't just make it so the child decides when they want to speak and interact in an uncomfortable situation it completely shuts down the part that allows them to have to social skills to talk to adults or kids his own age.

Like the title, this video is about the basics of Selective Mutism in kids. This video explains the myths vs. reality of how people think kids just refuse to speak when in reality they have an anxiety disorder that actually shuts down their ability to speak in situations they don't feel the most comfortable in. She explains that 1 in 140 children ages 3 to 8 have selective mutism. It makes it really difficult for the child because they do have to go to school everyday and selective mutism makes it almost impossible for them to reach milestones mentally and socially. The video also explains how there is help available for kids and parents through therapy that allows the kids to have different ways to work through selective mutism.

In this video, Dr. Lindsey Bergman talks about the differences and signs of Selective Mutism compared to regular shyness. She says there is a similarity with the way a Child with Selective Mutism will appear and the way that a shy child will appear but a major differences is that shyness is a tepromental trait and not a disorder that gets in the way of the child's life. The timeline is different with a child with Selective Mutism and shyness when knowing someone meaning that a child with shyness will warm up to someone but a child with Selective Mutism will have a lot of trouble warming up to someone even with a lot of time.

Video #6 Selective Mutism: Beyond Talking

This video talks about breaking the cycle for kids with Selective Mutism by slowly introducing them into things they fear. For the child you would work from the easiest exposer to the hardest and make it so your child knows exactly what to expect. In order for this to work effectively you also need to praise your child for the hard work they are putting in. An example of a step would be putting the child in the position where they have to ask the teacher to go to the bathroom. This wouldn't be in front of any of the kids just by themselves and once they have achieved that goal they would do it in front of the class. To practice the social skills you want to do something that the child enjoys so it doesn't feel like a chore. The most important thing is preparing the child for what is going to happen no matter how big or little the situation may seem in your head.

This video shows a real life example of a child suffering from Selective Mutism. The video tells us how this girl, Lily, wouldn't talk in school, wouldn't go to the bathroom in school, if something happened to her she wouldn't speak up about it. This is when her parents knew to do something and put her in a program called "Best Buddies". This program according to the parents allowed her to "speak more to people in one week than she had in her entire life". Because of the program they noticed a significant difference and couldn't be happier with her progress.
