Linocut Project Requirements

Students will create an original drawing, transfer to a linoleum block, carve, and print. You will turn in a total of 6 prints. _{(Which means you may prints upwards of 25 prints to get 6 of quality).}

Students will:

Print black on white paper
Print light colors on dark paper
Print dark colors on light paper
Print on alternative paper (newspaper, music paper, painted paper, etc.)
Add additional color to a print with watercolor (or similar colored media)
Embellish a print in anyway you see fit (adding collage, sew on it, paint on it, draw on it
You will turn in your best print from each task above, (totaling 6 prints).

For this project, you will re-create the album art for a favorite album, OR you will create album art for a favorite playlist.
Your album art should communicate the meaning, message, and mood of the album.
Your artwork should showcase excellent craftsmanship, creativity, and clarity of message. You can use any media or imagery to create your artwork.
When you are done, you will ask two people what musical artist or genre they think your album art is for/about (if you were clear with your album art, they should be able to guess at least the genre and/or time period).

And.. as always...

Brainstorm/Mindmap. As yourself these questions:
1. What are three adjectives/feelings that come to mind when thinking about or listening to the music? (basically, what is the "mood" of the album)?Examples: Chaos, pain, calm, peace, angst, fear, sadness, love, breakup, etc. How can you evoke those feelings in your artwork?
2. What is the album about?
3. What is the music genre? What is the time period it was made?
4. What imagery, colors, shapes, textures come to mind when listening to the music? Example: Scratchy lines, darkness, smooth textures, bright happy colors, trees, a pool, outer space... it could be anything!

To Consider During Critique:

A general rule is: A compliment AND suggestion :) Here are some things you can give compliments and suggestions on:

1. Composition: Are the objects in the picture plane balanced with each other? Is there a focal point? Does the character make sense in its setting? Can you tell which compositional strategy the artist is using?
2. Negative/Positive Space: Is there too much/not enough negative (empty) space? Is there a good balance? What can you suggest that the artist do to address the empty/negative space?
3. Accuracy: Is the drawing accurate? Are there any obvious flaws that the artist shoudl address? What do you notice that should be fixed? Give them a suggestion.
4. Craftsmanship: Is the artwork neat? Does it need to be cleaned up? Give a suggestion for where/how they can "clean up" their work.
5. Values: Are there a range of values (darks and lights or color blends) or could the artist use more dark darks and light lights or more blends? Let the artist know.
5. Color: Does the artist use color well? How could s/he improve? Give a suggestion.
6. Meaning: Can you infer the meaning or story of the piece from the images or is something getting lost? Does the artist need to clarify their message? How can s/he do that?
7. Other Perspective: If you (the critiquer) were to create this piece, what would you do?

After you complete your FULL CHOICE charcoal, your next project will be FULL CHOICE (any media). It must be completed by the end of the quarter (Oct 29), and it will be graded with the same rubric as all of your other projects, meaning risk, creativity, originality, are all crucial parts, still!

Please begin by adding resources images to a GOOGLE DOC and posting the link to the doc on your column in Padlet (or simply sharing it to my gmail -- bookers@nostoschools.org)

Watercolor Steps

Get set up for watercolor. Play with the paints for a few minutes.
Watch and paint along with "Watercolor Tips and Tricks" on GC.
Paint avocado without help.
Paint avocado Bob Ross Style with me! Recording is in GC under "Watercolor."
Paint from one of the other "Watercolor Image Resources" on GC. There's an apple, beet, peach, etc.
PLEASE repeat step 4 if you're asked to or want more practice. We should focus on color matching (I'll show you a great trick with an index card!)

Once you're completed with all four of the above, you can start working on a watercolor painting of your own choice! Still, I recommend fruit, veggies, flowers, food, candy, desserts, etc (things from the natural world).

Linocut Printmaking

How to Get Started:

Research: Screenshot at least 5 linocuts that you like. You can search instagram, tiktok, pinterest, etc. Be sure that the artists name/handle is visible. They do NOT need to be artworks you want to replicate... just art you honestly really like!
Resources: Start gathering image resources to create a great drawing. (A great print starts with a great drawing). Put those resources into a Google Doc and email them to me: bookers@nostoschools.org
Thumbnails: While drawing from resources, create at least 2 different thumbnail sketches for your idea. Show them to your peers.
Draft: Choose your favorite/best to turn into a detailed draft. Be sure your draft is the exact size of the printing block you will be using.
Critique: Show your draft to your peers. Give and take feedback. This is your last chance to make important changes.
Transfer: We will then transfer the image to your block. We will stain it with India ink, you will mark which areas to carve (with "x" for example), and you will get carving!

** REMINDER that everything prints backwards. If you have lettering, you need to be sure to flip your drawing before you transfer it. I will show you how to do this, do not worry!**

(Non-Dominant Hand) Pictionary!
