In paragraphs 21 and 22 in "Call Me Maria", the author uses sensory details in Mami's request that Maria return to the island using the senses of sight and hearing. For example it states "When we come back to the living room, she is calmer. I let her sit at my desk under the street-level window where I watch legs go by when I do my homework, when I write to her." This shows us that she is using her sense of sight to describe how her room looks like and what she sees when she sits beside the window. Also, in paragraph 21 it states "Then, I show her my little, cave-like bedroom. I show her how I can feel the giant boiler, the Dragon, in the winter by putting my ear to the wall." The author is using her sense of hearing to describe what she hears when she put her ear to the wall. The effect that this achieves is that the reader can visualize what is she doing.
