What is a boycott? How did this play a role in the 1980 and 1984 Olympics? Who hosted and who would not come?

A boycott is a withdrawal from commercial or social relations with an organization, people or a country as a protest or punishment. Boycott played a role in the 1980 and 1984 Olympics when many countries that were led by the U.S. held their athletes back from the Moscow Olympics in 1980. 4 years later, the USSR didn’t send their athletes to the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles because they did not feel safe.

What are 3 ways the Olympics created a competition between the US and USSR

One way the Olympics created competition between the US and USSR was having the two Countries face each other (and other Countries) in different events that could prove their dominance. Another way that the Olympics created a competition between the two countries was showing their pride. All of the flags and fans could prove that one country is better than the other. The last way that the Olympics created competition between the US and USSR was displaying political settings from the USSR. The Soviet Union showed their Political Dominance and how everyone should have a Communist government.

What 3 comparisons could be made in the Cold War Olympics to present day Olympics?

One comparison that can be made today is the US and Jamaica in the Track & Field event in the Olympics. Usain Bolt and many other talented runners hold many records that the US wants to beat. The US wants to show their dominance. Another comparison is all of the Countries trying to win events over the Soviet Union (since the Soviet Union holds the most gold medals). One last comparison that can be made to present day is China (communist country) trying to show the US (democratic country) that they are better.
