When you are a Greaser your hair is everything. When Pony got jumped they said they were going to cut his hair off.

Ponyboy could have gotten a ride from Two-bit but instead he chose to walk home. This caused him to get jumped which he knew could happen. Also Ponyboy ran from the cops knowing that if they plead in court it would be deemed as self defence.
