<title>Students will read this book to learn of Harriet’s influence on the Civil War. She was the daughter of a preacher and one of 11 children. Her brothers were expected to become successful preachers, but the girls in this family were not permitted to speak publicly. Harriet was outraged over slavery and decided to use her pen instead of her voice to write Uncle Tom’s Cabin, informing readers of the evils of slavery. Students will be asked to critically analyze why they think the sons were encouraged to become preachers but the girls in the family weren’t permitted to even speak in public. How did this expectation play out for Harriet? Was she successful without using her voice? What evidence can you show that supports your answer? (Goals 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)</title>
