1. I thought at first we are going to study about culture like the one in BDKL class, but after attending several classes I realize what we are studying is deeper than that. I'm now in the state of seeing things with different eyes.
2. I will not say that this subject help me to understand my life better because there are still many many things that I still don't know about. However, attending this class surely enrich my knowledge and my understanding regarding my surrounding. Making me more aware of what happening arround me.
3. Before this classes I certainly didn't have any interest in my surrounding. I only focus on myself, if something happen as long as its not concerned me I will not care about that. After taking this class, my awareness is heightened. Now I see underneath the underneath of the situation happening right now.
4. The knowledge of fatalism is what changing me the most. What I percieved when people are extremely accepting their fate is something good. But when I see it in the perspective of Marxism, the fatalism could be taken advantage of by the capitalist , so I will try to see and raise my awareness on what people try to do to me.
5. For me happiness is when you could distinguish what you need and what you want, and feel satisfied when you get what you need. Also when you could do something, even a smallest thing that could make other people happy is when I feel happiness

1. I thought that this class was going to discuss many culture around the world without using any perspective or theory, but the reality was different and we discuss many theories and applied it to a culture. It was intriguing nevertheless.
2. It does help me a little. It helps me in how I see pop culture.
3. Before I took ICS Class, I never thought that Punk is one of the subculture and has their own history to the point that Punk is considered a culture. After taking this class though, I see that many things and many communities are considered a subculture or even a counter-culture. After taking this class I understand that we have to be careful in what activity or community we involve ourselves in.
4. The subject that really changed me is Post-Modernism. It made me realize that I have been living in my own hyperreality. That things I thought was the real thing is actually a copy of a copy, that things that may look real, is not real at all.
5. For me personally, happiness means feeling content. I feel content when I had the time to read my favorite series, with my cat on my lap, and a hot steaming cup of coffee. Thus having a time for myself with my loved ones, doing the thing I love, is my happiness.

1. My first impression on this subject is that I thought we were going to learn about other countries' cultures especially the English speaking countries' culture knowing the fact that we are an English literature major. But turned out it is more than I expected but in a good way because it helps me to comprehend people with their groups and social practices. Honestly, I have always loved learning about culture. I am impressed by how this subject gave me knowledge that makes me more aware of my surroundings.
2. Yes, i think this lesson built my concern about what happens in my environment and what my life is like. I just acknowledged that I am a part of base by learning about Marxist theory. Taken for example, I go with the mainstream by liking the western bands, I went to places that are the source of capitalism such as Dufan, Mall, and etc. Moreover, I realized that I am no different with those people who are overwhelmed by everything that is beyond our reality like for example, I wrote some kind of fiction story that makes me become a hyperreality person. and I like the fact that I know these things and myself better after I got into ICS class.
3. Before I took ICS class, I see the phenomenon around me either as an entertainment that I enjoyed or a platform for me to criticize but then after taking ICS I realized that it was not only an entertainment. There is always a certain purpose behind those phenomenon that I can analyze so does criticizing it. if I know the reasons behind it I would not judge people quickly and not to create assumption based on my lack of information.
4. the point in ICS that extremely changed my view is that people are not as original as I thought they were because by learning post modernism, I know that everything is a copy of a copy. And I started to realize that people could do something scary just to prove that they are different from others so it makes me come up with a conclusion that not all the people try to fit in an environment that they do not want to be in.
 5. Happiness for me is when I make myself proud, because by being proud of myself, I can learn to appreciate myself. Happiness also happens when I am around the people that I love and then they show me how helpful I am in their lives. And last but not least is when other people laugh because of my jokes.

1. I think this subject opens our mind to see the life around us from a different perspective. In class we've been taught through theories, but we haven't applied them in real life. So, basically learning this subject is very interesting for me because we could be more aware with things that happens around us.

2. Yes, it does. I think because of learning this subject, I became more aware with the things around me that can give some influence, like advertisement in the media, rumours, myths, etc

3. Honestly, before taking this class I don't really care about those cultural phenomenon. Because, before I know the knowledge that lies behind all of those phenomenon, I don't really think it is important to observe it with special methods. But after I took ICS class, I understand that those cultural phenomenon relates to each other and it can give some impact to us.

4. One of them is the post-modernism. After learning this theory, I realised that the things around us nowadays has made us living in a hyperreality. By learning this theory, I become more aware and try to distinguish between what is real and what is not.

5. For me happiness means having your family and friends stands beside you in every situation and also when you were stay in good health. That is the greatest gift of all, and I thank Allah for everything that is given to me. :)

1. I think this subject is very interesting. At first, I thought this subject is going to discuss only 'high culture' and contain complex analysis of culture. However, this subject is actually easy to understand and I could easily relate this to many social practices that happen around me.
2. Absolutely. The subject uses many social practices that happens in my environment as the discussion. There are many aspects of life that usually slip in my attention. After learning this subject, I become aware of what really happens in my environment and I learn that any simple thing could give big impact to my identity, attitude, perception, and ideology.
3. Before learning ICS, I don't have any interest in analyzing culture that happens around me. However, learning this subject makes me see the world with many different perspectives as if I use some different lenses in seeing the world. Without realizing it, I start to related many things that happen around me to what I've already learned in ICS class.
4. The most important point that change my view is how one habit, even if we don't realize it, could give a big impact and even create a new culture that could affect myself (attitude and identity) and also other people.
5. I think happiness is not about how we achieve something or create something. It is not about what you belongs and what you give. People sometimes trying so hard to reach happiness and forget that basically, happiness is as simple as putting a genuine smile on our life and spread the joyous vibe to our loved one.

1. My first thought was that this subject is going to be similar to CCU (Cross cultural understanding). In which, we learn more about cultures in the context of literature. And to be honest, it is not what ive anticipated. In ICS class, all we learn were real life phenomenons. Furthermore, we see those phenomenons with lot of analysis theories. Which is a perfect subject for 6th semester students.

2. It clearly does help me understand the surroundings of me. In certain aspects, i actually can 'be aware' to certain things, due to me being an adult. But, learning more in this class has opened the new perspective of seeing things, just like Literature Criticism class and Media Discourse.

3. Before taking the class, if i meet phenomenons which i read on internet (my main source), i sometime will blindly take a big conclusion of the situation. Which means i would not read any references about the subject. And after taking the class, now i wont take any blind conclusion without reading 2-3 other references. That is how i see phenomenons now.

4. Marxism is the theory which gives me the biggest scope to me. As a Christian, i always try to give something to the lower people. Marxism divides the society into bourgeois and proletariat. Seeing this as a guy who sometime gives, kinda pissed me off. How could a group of people used a group of the same species as them, as a money-maker?? Why would even they do that? And of course the answer is always the $$$$$$$. How could money blinds an eye anyway?

5. This is maybe the most cliche answer of all time. But happiness is where people around us are also happy. I know that i spoke in Drama class that 'happiness is where we have good amount of resources (material)', and it does mean that the more we have, the more we should give. By then, the people could be happy and so the watching Eye in the sky.

1. I thought this subject will discuss any kind of culture in all around the world without included any theories, but I was wrong. However, this subject really increase my knowledge, not only in academic but also the others, like social and etc.
2. Yes, of course. I become more aware of the environment around me, especially the pop culture and sub-culture. Actually, I'm a k-popers (korean pop lovers) and a Beliebers (Justin Bieber fans) too. For pop culture, I see how the artists and media influence me (or the others too) to like them and do anything just to support them. And for the sub-culture, actually I just know that they are exist for their identity to be recognized, I thought that they are exist but just less famous than the others. But, the point here is pop culture and sub-culture people needs the acknowledgement from others.
3. After taking ICS class, I don't want to just accept what I like easily. But, I have to see what's the positive of it for me.
4. The point that extremely change me is perhaps Marxism, for example, I always want to go to a concert of my favorite idols and purchase some money for my favorite idols' merchandise. But, after I took the ICS class, I don't want to be like that, like I don't want spending my money just for something what I want but not what I need.
5. Happiness is when I can hold back what I want for what I need. Also, happiness is when you're having your parents in complete.

Perhaps just little thing but have many thing inside it.
3. Before take this class. I just like "who cares?". Howeve, after take this class i'm like "i have to be more aware". And i have to be critically of some phenomenon.
4. I think all of them. But mostly is post modernism.

1. At first, I thought we are going to study cultures, norms and values from several countries like what I get in Cross Cultural Understanding class. After taking this subject, I'm very satisfied with everything that I get in the class. This subject not only give me new knowledge about many theories, but also widen my knowledge about how this world is work and now I knew that culture is not only about norms, values and habit in society.
2. Yes, it does. It open my eyes that every little things around me can be a culture or phenomenon. It is not only shows me the way people live but also told me the reason they do or make the culture or the phenomenon.
3. Before I take this subject, when I see cultural phenomenon, I only judge the phenomenon based on what I can see such as the people who do it, or who make it popular, but I don't think about the reason the phenomenon can be popular, or the people behind who control or make the cultural phenomenon.
After take this subject, when I see cultural phenomenon surround me, sometimes I start to think about how the phenomenon can be popular, who is the superstructure and base in that cultural phenomenon, and the influence that people get from the cultural phenomenon.
4. The topic about popular culture. This topic open my eyes and broaden my knowledge about how popular culture influence and loved by so many people. Now I knew that every popular culture have their own formula and standard to make them love by many people continously and can give the capitalist more profit since they are not only make people love the popular culture, but also make them become consumptive. So, as one of the 'victim' of the popular culture, I need to be more aware of what the popular culture wants me to do or to follow. I also need to filter every popular culture that I enjoyed.
5. Happiness is when my day is going smoothly as I plan, when I'm satisfied with what I get and I did not jealous with what others get. Happiness is when i can be a useful person to others, especially people surround me that I love.

In this subject we learned about the originality of the culture, it really helped me to define what is the original culture and the expansion of culture. Also this subject helped me a lot to analyzed the habit of people nowadays.

Yes, this subject really helps me not only to get more attention to our environment condition but also my own life. Marxism theory is the one of the subject which makes me realize about the big effect of capitalism. In this era people who has power such as money can be charge, for example in my environment the student who bring a car while in college will assumed by other people as a rich kid and it makes them popular. Meanwhile in my life, i always pay an item in game to make me win in the game which is spend my money a lot. Therefore there's a saying "money can be charged". Thanks to this subject, i will not spend my money for that such thing anymore.

Before i learned this subject, i always thought that western culturer that entered to our countryin is cool and i always accepted that as my habit. After i learned this subject i realized that the western culture that entered to our country is delivered by a superstructure and the people who accepted that are part of false conciousness.

The subject in this study that changed my view is when i learned post modernism.

1. At first, I thought that in this class, we will only discuss phenomenon that happen in our society. However, I never expect that we will discuss it by using theories from many experts. In the end, this class succesfully enrich my knowledge to the point that I can see the world with a different light.

2. This subject actually help me to understand my life better. I become more aware of popular culture as bit by bit, I apply the theory that I learn from this class such as Gramsci's hegemony or Baudrillard's simulation, simulacra, and hyperreality to the phenomenon that happen in my surroundings.

3. Before I took this class, I never knew that most of us are living in a false conciousness life. I consume pop culture without realizing its impact. I only follow the trend. Nevertheless, by taking this class, I finally learn how popular cuture works and how everything that I consume unconsciously influence my identity.

4. The point in ICS subject that extremely change my view is actually the Marxist theory of false consciousness. I just realize that I'm living in a state of false consciousness as I consciously follow every rules that made by a superstructure. For example, as I'm a fan of K-Pop, I'm willing to save my money to watch my idol's concert. That's when I know that I'm a victim of popular culture and capitalism.

5. For me, happiness is when I can make other people happy. It's just that I think when someone can smile because of me, it really warms my heart and it makes me think that I can be a useful person for others. Another happiness for me is when I'm with my family.

This subject has taught me more than that which made me open my eyes of what's really happening around me.

2. Yes, this subject does help me to understand my life better. After taking this subject I won't let media manipulate my mind, because I always trusting the media that I watch or read.

3. Before I took this subject, when I see a cultural phenomenon, I just enjoy it and never think about anything about that phenomenon, but after taking this class, I started to critics the phenomenon that see beside just enjoying it.

4. The subject that really changed me is post-modernism. I realized that every thing are not original as I thought. Before I took ICS class, I also live in hyper reality, and I also realized that hyper reality is not only when I imagine something that is not real, but also when we go to some entertaining places, like Sea World, cinema 4D, etc.

5. For me honestly, happiness is when I can help people by myself and make people happy because of me. It proves that my life is also precious on their eyes.

1. I did not expect to learn lot of theory such as marxism, feminism, capitalism, etc at all. What I thought, at first, was we will learn about various culture around the world only and not link them with any of mentioned theories.

2. Even if not entirely, yes, it does. As we have learnt back in all of our ICS classes, there are so many ideology and belief in the world. Our enviroment does consist of many different culture as well. For those very reason, I need to be careful to choose what ideology or belief I want to hold, as well as respect other people since they probably would not have the same way of think as I am.

3. Unlike before, I became more aware of what happens around me. I told myself to not to instantly believe of what appear in, for example, the media, books, novels, etc. Because without we even realise, there must be, at least, one ideology slipped into them. Media also is never neutral. Therefore, we need to be careful to choose what we should believe.

4. When I realise that we are what we consume. What we wear, eat, watch, read, or even any simplest thing such as anything attached to our body will represent our identity, our truly self are.

5. Happiness for me is when I feel like enjoying the moment and had no worries, no pressure around my head at all. As when I had a day off, therefore I can watch my favourite films, tv shows, or tv series all day long.

1. This subject is very interesting. At first, I thought it would certainly learn about cultures and social practices without applying such theories like I learnt in Literary Criticism, in fact, it is also related to one and another. ICS does increase my level of awareness and my knowledges about my surroundings and environment.

2. Yes, this subject really helps me to understand my life and environment. I realize that culture and our life are contiguous. It reflects through our way of life. For example, when I learnt about five component elements of culture (circuit of culture) – these are representation, identity, consumption, regulation, and production, I am amazed and realize that those are related to each other. Such products or cultures can represent your identity through symbols or signs that glue on yourself. Even what you consume can represent who you are.

3. Before learning this subject, I honestly did not really pay attention to my surroundings. Like when I saw “unique vespa community” in the street, I always thought why did such thing like that exist? What do they actually want to do? I judge the phenomena based on what I see without thinking more deeply to understand what actually make it happen and exist. After taking ICS, it helps to dig my understandings about the surroundings, I cannot judge things with naked eyes. For example, that unique vespa community that I always think they are a little bit crazy and anti-mainstream even do not really care about themselves (such from their appearance). They actually seek for recognition from others, they are the same with us (normal people) even though their own way of life is different. I learn many life values from my surroundings.

4. Marxism and Postmodernism are the ones that really change my point of view. The class struggle is real. I agree that we cannot live without money. Everything needs money nowadays. I am a fan of two Korean boy bands, and after taking this subject I realize that I have false consciousness for buying their official albums or attend their concert that actually it is just also a false pleasure. (However, it seems like I can never stop spending money for it even though some people may think it’s meaningless :D). Then, postmodernism theory of Baurdrillard about hyperreality, It really amazes me how we actually live in hyperreality. Taking for example, chatting with my friends through social media such as line, twitter, WA, etc. However, it does help me to still keep in touch with anyone.

5. Happiness for me means when I am always grateful for what I have, making my loved ones smile happily (or even proud) of what I do, and also when I can gather with my bestfriends who have been far away from me, sharing experiences and stories with love and laughter.

1. This subject really suits my expectation. Since I am so interested about culture (and have thought about writing a thesis on it once), I felt satisfied and fulfilled. (still not sure about writing a thesis about it tho lol). One thing that I'm really sad about was we didn't get to dig in deeply about each cultural theory (such as Marxism, subculture and counterculture, hyperrealism, etc.), but I realize that was how far as it has to be since we are only learning the introduction. I hope I can get a chance to deepen cultural studies in the future.

2. Yes, pretty much. When learning counterculture and subculture, I became aware that actually culture are divided into layers. That made me be more critical and selective whenever I found myself opening up to new culture. For example, cosplay, lolita, or harajuku fashion in Japan. I used to think that it is very normal for Japanese people to go around the town dressing up uniquely (or sometimes, weirdly) like that because that's what I saw in the media my whole life, most of the times. But after ICS I realized that that was probably only a subculture in the middle of a widely adapted dominant culture in Japan. I used to think I wanted to try dressing up like that but LOL, gotta think twice and be more selective next time, since I know that not everyone can accept that. We need to find an identity for ourselves. We may explore, but it's not necessary for us to dive into who we are not.

3. I felt that I'm more open minded now in viewing various cultures (hopefully). Because I get to understand how and why people separate themselves from the dominant and create an identity of their own. I tend to be a bit judgmental before, and if one culture does not suit me, I rejected or avoided it, in a cautious way. However after taking this class, I understand that humans do vary. Each is a unique being on his own, and people always got their own reasons to do something, regardless it is morally justifiable or not. So at least, when I see something new that shocks me, I think to myself that it's as simple as "they are who they are, and we are who we are". No more cautiousness or ill-feeling, only understanding and selecting out.

4. Subculture, counterculture, and Marxism theories changed me a lot. I hope the answers in number 3 are sufficient enough to depict my transformation before and after taking this class. I got to understand that people got their own purpose, ideas, and motives. So maybe they are just trying to give their life a purpose to live up to, and a destination to go to.

5. Happiness for me personally is when I have a purpose in life and knowing that I'm working to achieve it. I grew up as an active kid who couldn't remain slacking off. I love it when I can be productive. It bores me easily when I'm not doing anything and when I have no idea to which point am I going forward.

1. I thought it was going to be boring to learn theories from the beginning of the class until the end. I never expected to learn the similar theories that I learn from Literary Criticism. Instead, honestly, the theories and practices in ICS turned out to be more fun than LC, since the theories are unconsciously reflected in our daily lives. I think cultural practices are more interesting to be analyzed than literary works.

2. Yes, especially on Pop culture, Marxism and Post-modernism. I could say, I was a victim of both theories. I used to be idolizing several Hollywood pop singers and groups, a hard-core fan, I think. I was willing to buy anything as long as they’re related to the products, including their books, albums, concert ticket, perfume, clothes, and attending every fan events in which they are involved. My album collection of them, if I accumulate is more than twenty. I was also deceived by my false consciousness to buy their perfume which was as worthy as a price of a smart phone. That was my biggest regret because I could use the money to spend for something else. As I get older and wiser after learning ICS, I just realized that those things are meaningless to me right now. It only gives an immediate pleasure which did not last long. I regret it so much, but I cannot do anything instead of not letting myself to be trapped into the capitalism brutality in the future.

3. I was quite apathy before taking ICS class, so I was not that aware as well as paying attention on any cultural phenomenon back then and considered it just fine as long as I am not affected. However, after taking ICS class, it demanded me to think critically. Thus, through ICS theories, they make me realize there are few cultural phenomenon exist in my surrounding like the pop culture and capitalism which always haunt us every day.

4. I was very consumptive before, so from the Marxism theories that I learned from ICS, I can decrease the desire of myself to waste my money to spend on temporary products which only give me an immediate pleasure. I have fortified myself with the questions that always come to mind before I consume capitalist products like ‘What will this product do to me?’, ‘Do I really need to consume this product?’ or ‘Will this product give me a long term satisfaction?’.

5. Happiness is making my parents happy and feeling proud of me. Happiness is when I do my best and I could achieve it through the obstacles that almost stop me. Happiness is when I’m able to make others feeling happy because of me. Happiness is when people are influenced of my good deeds, in other words, I can be their inspiration even though I do not think I deserve to be one.

At first, I thought I will deal with things like social problems, cultural phenomenon, etc yet right when the RPKPS was given, I was bit shocked that there will be many theories to concern about.

1. At first, i have never expect this subject is going to be pretty much different from what i had thought about "cultural studies", which is would relate to the cultural background from many countries. But then, as well i involved in this class, i realize that what i learn about culture is being more than the word "culture" itself. It was feel like culture is now become very close and much familiar to me, especially since it much related to my social life. If this subject never be recognized by me, i perhaps may always limit my point of view and perception about culture.

2. It absolutely yes. Honestly, backthen, I sometimes just fed myself to something interesting, which makes me over-enjoyed it and forgeting the others. But again, this subject wake me up that i'm not living in a perfect world with its proper condition. It was like, a thing that i thought good is not fine at all. How did i consumed is actually already controlled by others, i just realized it now. It punched me that what i know about myself is no longer the best one. It taught me that there are still much lesson that i have to find out about my life including the other one.

3. To be honest, before taking ITCS, i'm kind of careless about them, especially if it does not relate to me at all. It was like, i would aware if it needed to be aware to, but if it's not, i prefer do not mind myself on it. However, after i take ITCS, i might say i gain pretty much more consideration to phenomenon arrond me. Moreover, i sometimes being "too much" care about something unimportant to be cared. Eventhough i do not directly involved in that case, I just unconciously put my attention on it. And yes, I think I just naturally doing it nowdays.

4. Regard to this question, i directly link it to hyper-reality and false conciousness. Since i'm one of people who loves Korean drama, i was often dream and even hope for having a perfect life with a perfect partner as well it showed. It sometimes makes me hard to become a greatful person which is had been given lots "anugrah" from Allah and I started to compare my own to the others. This kind of view then slowly change and dissappeared from me. I just have know that it was totally not the real one, and that perfect life is created by human to provide an addicted story to be viewed. I think nowdays i just still adore them with my realistic perspective .

5. Happiness is actually very flexibel, depend on how we are looking on it. But for me, happiness is when i feel so greatful from what is given now and feel confidents to do best things not only for me but also for others.

Rosidah Sartika

1. At first, I never imagined that ICS subject will get so much impression in me especially that this subject will change my point of view regarding social environment and context. As time goes by, I got many interesting fact and new things not only about social, culture, but also how we can interpret a very small habit for example what we consume and we eat every single day represents what we truly are. So overall, ICS was so knowledgeable and inspiring for the person like me who usually won’t get attracted easily.
2. Yes, ICS has unlimited perspective on seeing our social environment. I learned how we should have a firm barrier to remind us what we see, what we hear, what we consume can’t be devastate ourselves, we should always to be careful on what community ourselves involve in but still we should see all the culture in many perspective so that we can survive in any situation.
3. ICS helps me to be more wise on seeing a social phenomenon. Like counterculture that relating to negative thing, dangerous and trying to be out of the box that eventually this culture want to get recognition. I usually very open-minded to this kind of thing, accepting it as long as they don’t get me involve. After I learned what actually behind their existence, I realized that us in this case me was too judgmental without take a look insight that me as part of society, sometimes we never think counterculture was happened because we lacked emphaty, acted like we didn’t care, but actually it’s also our duty to embrace them.
4.Regarding Marxism, I don’t even realize that this class system is still exist today. It might be not as conservative as the original Marxism was, but the ideology or social practices of this system represent that in our society, the one who becomes the superculture is very powerful in modern way, it’s more like ugrade/new version of marxims for example like what we already discussed in class “ibu-ibu arisan” by Dhianissa’s group. It’s extremely changed my point of view that we can say the original marxim was old but the new version is more powerful in modern era like in our society today.
5. As I grow up, I changed my thought of what happiness frequently, 4 years ago happiness to me is when I do what I love, I achieve what I want. Now my definition of happiness is when I don’t forget to be grateful for every single things Allah gives to me, love what we have, feel satisfty to what we have or in islam “qonaah”.
