The author did a good job of having multiple stories all connected to each other somehow. Each story shows the different characters and how they react to power. For example, one story may have three characters who do not want anything to do with power, while the next story has two characters who will do anything to have power. : )

I believe that the author excelled at connecting multiple subplots, and developing characters. Sam's view of power changed throughout multiple circumstances, and the position he was in. Other characters have developed also; Quinn was Sam's friend, worked with Caine, and came back to Sam again. There were multiple subplots of Sam and his friends, a girl named Lana, and Caine and his friends. They all were in separate places, the author jumping back and forth between stories. They all connected into a bigger plot and the readers could make sense of the significance of each subplot.

The author, Michael Grant, does a magnificent job exhibiting symbolism. For example using the different books in the series showing the phases of their world. Gone, Hunger, Lies, Plague, Fear, and Light all display a distinct time in their world

Michael Grant conveys many plots but they all connect and come together in which is fascinating to read. The fact that they conjoin together for the bigger picture is phenomenal and makes the story even more appealing to the young adults that are reading this book. The enlightenment makes scenes better and clearer to understand with the main characters and also gets you emotionally attached. Grant does a great job reminding us as children that they are kids like the rest of us and kind of makes us look like we, ourselves, have been put into that perspective as if we were Sam or Astrid in the book.
