Titus has grown up with is feed installed, he is the way he is because  simply because he is still a teenager and is immature.

One character trait to describe Titus in the start of the novel is resentful and negative.
One quote to support this is at the beginning of the novel when Titus is recalling his vacation on the Moon for spring break; "We went to the Moon to have fun, but the moon turned out to completely suck."
Another quote is from the first chapter, when Titus is describing why he thinks the moon sucks; When you get over being like WHOA unit! Another character trait that describes Violet through the novel is that she is much more cultured than the other characters.
One supporting quote is when Violet and Titus are talking about languages made obsolete by the feed; "This is the language called basic," she said. On the paper it said:

However, as a result of never having a feed Violet's father is also show to be/ have been rejected.

One quote is shown when Violet's father recalls why he let Violet have a feed installed;" Two men were interviewing me. Talking about this and that. Then they were silent, just looking at me. Then they were looking at each other, and doing what I might call smirking. I realized they chatted me, and that I had not responded. They found it funny. Risible. That a man could not hear. Free to assess me as they would, right in front of me. He has grown to work hard and reap the rewards with a family and job. Despite this, he supports the idea of polluting the the world just for the benefit of man, with no regard for the ecosystem. 

One way to describe him for this view is ignorance. One example is show in the chapter "A question of moral" were he defends cutting down trees to make air factories; "That was knocked down to make an air factory". "Your kidding" said Violet. "Yeah, that's what happened"
