The relationship between Montag and Mildred was frustrating. This is evident as Montag tells Clarisse, “And my wife thirty and yet you seem so much older at times” This tells the readers that Mildred seems air-headed and childish because Clarisse is much younger yet she seems more mature as she’s able to communicate with Montag whereas when Montag and Mildred are talking, its hard for Mildred to understand and it annoys Montag.

They have a mutual relationship as they both benefit from it as for Clasrisse, Montag is her confider as she can interact with him normally as comapred to other people, and for Montag, Clasrisse helps him to find out who he truly is and what he really wants and his real emotions instead of the fake mask of happiness that he had put on. This can be seen from “ How odd. How strange. My wife is thirty yet you seem so much older at times.” and “You’re peculiar yourself, Mr Montag. Sometimes i even forget you’re a fireman.”

Montag and Clarisse have a mature friendship despite their age gap. They befriended each other really quickly, Montag finds comfort in speaking to Clarisse who always listens to him attentively unlike his wife. They are able to talk about anything. Clarisse also teaches Montag many life lessons by questioning him about his job and whether or not he really is happy. Only after meeting Clarisse, a mature teenager, did he start to reflect on his life.

In this scene, the firemen are impatiently waiting for an alarm so that they can go and do their work. Their work is burning down houses that have books, and that’s all they do. While waiting for the alarm, Montag realises that all the men are mirror images of himself and they all look alike. This shows shows how Montag doesn’t see himself as being part of them, thus showing that he is different and not the stereotypical fireman.
