Orthodox Jews use the word "shul" (meaning school) and Reform Jews call it "temple." The use of synagogue is the most likely to not be offensive to anyone despite their beliefs.

The history of Israel begins in the Torah, the Jewish book of the words of God, when God repeatedly makes a promise to Abraham, saying he will give Abraham's descendants a "land flowing with milk and honey." About 3200 years ago, a man named Joshua and his followers took over their "promised land." Even though they have often not been in political power and have been constantly living in persecution, Jews have been living in Israel ever since.

Typically, synagogues are run by a board of directors that is made up of lay people. Their jobs include management, maintenance, activities, and the hiring/firing of rabbi and chazzan. A synagogue, however, can exist and function without a rabbi or chazzan. Most small synagogues do not have chazzan. A synagogue is both a beit tefilah (house of prayer) and beit midrash (house of study).

After the conclusion of World War II, the United Nations got together and had a conference where the main concern was where to place the millions of European Jews left after the Holocaust, and what to do about the nation of Palestine. Originally, the UN wanted to divide the country into two separate nations, one for the Jews and one for the Arabs, but the Arabs disagreed with the proposition, while the Jews agreed. They then declared the region, with the help of the United Nations, the state of Israel.

All throughout history, Jews have been constantly persecuted. Recent events happening in Israel and the areas around it are no exception. Ever since the creation of the Jewish state in 1945, the Palestinians have been angry with the Jewish people, and the two groups have been almost constantly at war. Recently, in October of 2015, a new wave of violence started between these two groups. From January to October, Palestinians have killed 11 Jews and injured about 130, while Jewish law enforcement officers have killed 94 Palestinians, and injured just over 3200.
